A curated collection of rare Victorian number plates set to cross the auction block
In conjunction with this week’s Motorclassica event in Melbourne, Shannons is holding a special landmark number plate sale, featuring various sought-after lots that will be sure to fetch huge numbers.
The lowest-digit ‘Heritage Plates’ will be hugely in demand, and are likely to see the fiercest bidding wars.

Victorian ‘Heritage Plates’ “104”, “105”, and “106” will round off the night, each estimated to fetch between $200,000 to $280,000.
Though the highest estimated lot of the event, will see heritage plate “911” go under the hammer as the 22nd lot of the sale. Pre-auction estimate is set between a whopping $300,000 to $400,000 – though it only takes two very determined Porsche owners to see that soar well north of the guiding range.
To the unaware, the amount of money that the humble licence plate can change hands for can be flat out confounding. Though these are treated as genuine assets and commodities, and are valued as such by those able to afford them.
Earlier this year, the NSW motorcycle plate “4” came up for sale, with an estimate of up to $1 million.
And in 2017 at the Shannons Sydney Winter auction, its car equivalent “4” NSW plate sold for $2.45 million – far more expensive than any vehicle sold, and over $1 million above the estimated guiding range.
Lot 22, ‘911’ will be the lot to watch. We’ll report back once the sale concludes for a full list of results.
Stay tuned.
