The Dino range of sports cars was named in honour of Enzo Ferrari's son, Alfredino, who designed a dual overhead-camshaft V6 engine for both road and racing use before tragically passing away at the age of 24. The 206GT was the first model to be introduced in 1967, proving that Ferrari could compete with the likes of Porsche by producing a car in the more budget end of the sports car spectrum. The 206 featured a 2.0 litre transverse-mounted V6 engine capable of producing 160bhp at the 8,000rpm redline. After 150 206s were produced, the updated 246 GT and GTS were introduced, boasting a bigger and more powerful 2.4 litre engine, which produced almost 200bhp and powered the Dino onto a top speed of 148mph. This power was sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed all-synchromesh manual gearbox. The Dino's 2.4 litre V6 was used in several other Italian sports cars after its application in the 246, most notably the Lancia Stratos rally car. Weighing only 1,080kg, the perfect weight distribution of theDino thanks to its Rear-Mid-Engine layout was one of the defining features of the car, one of the all-time great handing Ferraris, on top of being one of the most beautiful. The car we are pleased to offer is a LHD example that was delivered new in January 1973 to German Concessionaire Auto Becker. It was born Azzuro Dino over Nero but sits today wearing the iconic Rosso over Pelle Beige colourway. The car is a matching numbers example that has recently been awarded Classiche Certification from the Ferrari Factory. The Dino is a staple of any Ferrari collection and is a car that every enthusiast should experience at least once in their lifetime.

File ImagesThis classic and nowadays much sought-after Ferrari was named after Enzo Ferrari's son Alfredino, who died in 1956, aged 24. Enzo Ferrari credits his son with the inspiration for a series of successful small and medium capacity V6 racing engines built by Ferrari from 1956, and in turn the name was given to a new line of mid-engined production Ferrari V6 coupes which first went on sale in 1969 in two-litre form. The definitive 246 Dino, with its 2.4 litre V6, appeared in late 1969 and fewer than 4,000 were built (about 1,200 of them the detachable roof Spyder version) before introduction of the slightly larger, and completely re-styled V8 engined 308 Dino in 1973.The delightful bodywork was designed by Pininfarina, and was built in steel by Scaglietti. It covered a straightforward chassis of tubular steel which carried wishbone independent suspension at each corner. The compact engine, with four chain-driven overhead camshafts, was mounted transversely above the five-speed gearbox and justahead of the rear axle line, allowing both a comfortable cockpit and usable boot space. With its flexible engine, uncomplicated chassis and outstanding handling, and superb looks the 246 Dino is a true classic the like of which has made the name Ferrari possibly the most revered of all motor manufacturers. It is certainly one of the most collectible of all Seventies sports cars. This particular left-hand-drive Dino is being offered for sale under very specific instructions, and Coys invite all interested parties to enquire for further details on the Lot by application.
