1971 Mercedes-Benz 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet (W111)Silver Grey (180) with Blue Leather and Air ConditioningA seminal car in the Mercedes-Benz back catalogue, the 220, 250, 280 and 280 3.5 Cabriolets make up four of the most iconic, desirable and collectible vehicles ever produced by the Stuttgart brand. The W111 would be replaced by the W108 and then W116, ultimately evolving into the S Class we know and love - a car that became synonymous with safety, reliability, luxury, taste and performance. The 280 SE 3.5 was the final incarnation of this divine cabriolet, replacing the 280SE in August 1969 and remaining in production until end of the W111 in July 1971.At just over 1.6 tons the 2.2 litre M127 engines fitted to the 220SE Cabriolet and it's 118hp output could be described as adequate, but not ample. Although the 2.5 litre replacement alleviated the perceived power deficit somewhat, it wasn't until the 280SE and then 280 3.5 V8 that the car really got the power plant that it's weight and staturedeserved. It is this 'end of the line' 3.5 V8 engine that makes the 280SE 3.5 Cabriolet the car that all collectors seek. This was Mercedes' first post-war passenger car with more than 3.0 litres displacement, utilising the all new M116 3499cc V8 engine with a punchy 200hp. The new engine gave the big cabriolet a top speed of 130mph, ample power for transporting four people with grace and pace.Owned by the upper echelons of society, the lawyers, bankers and Hollywood stars who loved these cars enjoyed a luxurious interior flush with the chrome, leather and burred walnut.Total production numbers for the 220, 250 280 and 280 3.5 Cabriolets combined stretch to less than 6,500 units - not nearly enough to satiate worldwide demand for these palatial open motorcars.Just 1,232 280SE 3.5 Cabriolets were built in this period, 1,164 of which were left hand drive. That leaves just 68 right hand drive cars, making this an extremely rare motor car. This car boasts a fantastically royal colour scheme for a car fitfor kings and queens.A superb opportunity to acquire one one of the most iconic, desirable and collectible Mercedes-Benz cars of all time. This particular 1971 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet enjoyed long-term enthusiast ownership for the last 30 years. It was owned by an East Coast collector for the past two decades, and before that, it was located on the West Coast with a collector for 10 years. This example is presented in wonderful condition after undergoing a no-expense-spared restoration to show quality by Road Scholars, of North Carolina. During the restoration, the engine was removed, the car was stripped to bare metal, and it received new paintwork, chrome, a new exhaust, and a new convertible top. The interior was completely reupholstered, and the car was fully detailed throughout, including the undercarriage and the engine bay. Finished in dark blue over a tobacco leather interior and currently showing 57,200 miles. The car retains a proper set of tools, a jack, and an owner's manual. When new, the 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet was considered by many to be the finest automobile in the world. Today, that belief remains true for manyMercedes-Benz enthusiasts. Its design is truly timeless and exhibits class and character all its own. This example would be the perfect acquisition for the individual looking for a sophisticated automobile that will never go out of style.

![CDATA[When ambitious industrialist and entrepreneur George Mortimer Pullman patented the Pioneer sleeping car in 1868, he wanted to revolutionise first and foremost rail travel. From that time on, the Pullman Palace Car Company transferred the concept of spaciousness and luxury to the automotive industry, which they also supplied with vehicle bodies. Introduced in 1963, the Mercedes-Benz 600, internally designated the W100, had few peers apart from the new Rolls-Royce Phantom V. It featured a new 6,332cc, overhead-cam V8, a dry-sump design with Bosch mechanical fuel injection that developed 245hp, as well as air suspension for a wonderful boulevard ride and a high-pressure hydraulic system that provided every power assist imaginable. There was a limited slip differential, servo steering and hydraulic disc brakes with vacuum servo assist at both ends. Other amenities included hydraulically operated windows, sunroof, glass partition, boot lit, horizontal/vertical movement and backrest angles ofseats as well as fully automatic controlled air conditioning. There were two wheelbases, 126' and 153'. The shorter wheelbase versions were both saloons, a division was optional. Long wheelbase cars were called Pullman and included a four-door division limousine, a six-door version with additional jump seats and a Landaulette. A mere 487 Pullmans were manufactured through to 1981, although only a few were built, all to individual special order, from 1972. Many were delivered new to various rulers and heads of state worldwide and some of them remain, well-maintained and still highly impressive, in government fleets to this day, even The King, Elvis Presley, had a Pullman. Finished in Raven Black with light tan interior, this Mercedes-Benz is in superb condition. Built as a four-door Pullman limousine with division, this is only one of 304 cars built in this configuration. Benefitting from conference seating configuration which is possibly one of the rarest options available. The twin facing rearseats are divided by a neatly housed cocktail requisites. A powered partition allows for additional privacy from the chauffeur. This magnificent car has benefitted from significant investment in recent times including a full repaint, the woodwork (of which there is lots) removed, stripped and refurbished. The chromework has also been removed and re-chromed, however perhaps the most time, attention and expense went into the interior trim which has been completely re-trimmed in the correct OEM style. This example of one of the most imposing of all post-war cars; smooth, quiet, and ridiculously comfortable, it is a magnificent machine in every way.]]
