Robin Lawton Vintage & Classic Cars are proud to Offer for Sale: Ex-Works Competition Department 1935 Riley TT Sprite AVC 19 - Chassis Number 22T1750 (one of 7 Works-built models) prepared to Original Specification. FIA, FIVA, HTP, VSCC We are proud and excited to bring to the market one of the most original Riley Team Cars AVC 19 which has just been the subject of a fastidious and long awaited restoration to original specification. The car now looks just at it did in 1935 when it made its race debut at the 1935 Tourist Trophy driven by Von der Becke and finishing a creditable 9th against some extremely formidable competition. The complete rebuild of this car, which was finished just over a week ago, was only possible because Robin Lawton Vintage & Classic Cars - were able to assist with securing the acquisition of numerous original components both body and mechanical which had hitherto been unavailable for at least the past 40 years! This Riley has a distinguished race history which includes: 1935 Tourist Trophy, 1936 French Grand Prix (finishing 3rd in the under 2 litre class), 1936 Tourist Trophy, 1937 Le Mans 24 Hours, 1937 French Grand Prix, 1937 Montlhery, 1945 Paris Benoist Cup and following an earlier restoration which was completed in 2009 the car was campaigned at Prescott and several other VSCC Events by Riley guru, Allen Clear. Significant historic competition cars always great create interest, but it is rare to find a car with such comprehensive and fully documented provenance dating back over 80 years. Many Evocations of the delectable TT Sprite have been created over the years but this is a true original with a virtually unrivalled pedigree in its class. Background on the car has been extensively researched and it is believed that this car, chassis 22T1750 was constructed in the Riley Works Competition Department using the chassis from the 6 cylinder Works MPH Racer - KV9478. The evidence for this is the fact that the nearside dumb iron shows evidence of the reuse of the chassis: 22T1750 is stamped on the side with evidence of 44T2128 stamped on the top of the dumb iron. There is also evidence that appears to show where the MPH chassis had its brackets for the front axle radius arms removed showing that AVC 19 was built up from KV9478 using parts available at the time. The aforementioned MPH had competed in the 1934 Le Mans before being dismantled by the works in the summer of 1935 with AVC 19 (chassis number 22T1750 being registered by the Riley Works in May 1936). There is the most substantial and fully documented history of the car, which is available, under separate cover, for interested parties. We also have photograph albums, historic notes and invoices which can be inspected at The Garage. Robin Lawton Vintage & Classic Cars is delighted to have been involved and able to work closely with the restorer and owners who led the project. We are pleased to offer for sale this immaculate Lotus Carlton only 4500 miles from new! The Lotus Carlton is a legend and the kind of car that comes along once in a generation. At a time when really fast four-door saloons were the preserve of BMW and Mercedes, this Vauxhall (Opel) derived super saloon arrived on the scene demolishing the opposition. Oddly, it wasn't its huge performance or masculine good looks that created the most fuss but the fact that the Daily Mail was so outraged by its stated top speed of 176mph, that it declared it too fast for British roads. Of course, the Lotus Carlton - or Type 104 to Lotus aficionados - was nothing of the sort, and although it shared its major components with a mainstream executive car, its level of development across every aspect of automotive dynamics had resulted in a truly special performance car. It was powered by a twin-turbo version of the venerable straight-six used in the Senator, which developed a remarkable 377bhp. To achieve that figure, Lotus had put a lot of work into the 3.6-litre power unit, uprating and strengthening the bottom end, porting the 24-valve cylinder head (from the Carlton GSI), and fitting forged 'slipper pistons' made by Mahle atop new Lotus-designed connecting rods tied to a counterweighted, forged steel crankshaft. The gearbox was the same six-speeder used in the Corvette ZR-1, the only transmission in GM's parts bin, capable of handling the car's monster torque. AP Group-C derived brakes - four-pot calipers with 330mm ventilated discs at the front and two-pot at the rear sat behind specially developed Goodyear tyres. Performance was brisk, to say the least. 0-60mph came up in 5.0 seconds, 0-100 was dispatched in 11.1 seconds, and in 1992 Autocar Magazine recorded a time of 17.0 seconds for their 0-100-0 challenge, 2nd best behind an F40, however, it's the car's maximum speed of 176mph that will always be quoted by its fans. Based on a civilised modern saloon car, the Lotus Carlton was tractable, light and well-mannered in town traffic, Supplied new by Moorland Motors of Blackpool in August 1991 and finished in the obligatory Imperial Green, this immaculate Lotus Carlton is car Number 28 out of a limited production of 284 UK, right-hand drive models. As you would imagine with the current displayed mileage, this car has spent a large percentage of its life in dry storage - only recently re-appearing and being subject to a re-commissioning at a marque specialist. It presents exactly as you would expect, virtually immaculate inside and out. It is complete with its original book pack and the numbered Lotus Carlton book that was presented to each owner at the time of sale. Almost certainly the finest example anywhere and still very fast even by today's standards. This is surely a great investment and sure to appreciate over the coming years.
