1923 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Barker 3/4 Cabriolet. Chassis number: 54LK Registration number: H0034BBB (Spanish) Arriving 10th March with us. This Barker bodied car has resided in Spain for most of its life. Significant engine works have recently been undertaken by Madrileno specialists Pueche & Co. The body is that of a 3/4 cabriolet & is indisputably the work of Barker. We have an identically bodied 20hp in at the same time & comparison of the timbers & construction has a number of features common & unique to both cars. The Rolls Royce Records record the car as having going to Park Ward for a heavier body. We can only assume that the purchaser mind was changed at some stage & that the car went to Barker rather then Park Ward. Charles Howard notes in correspondence that the works supplied new shackle pins in 1924 we assume to accommodate different springs suited to the lighter body that was fitted. More thorough photographs & description will follow as soon as we have got the car back to us Via Santander. .. 1915 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost London To Edinburgh Chassis number: 9AD Registration number: HLR5134 (German) In 1914 was an order for a new SIlver Ghost was placed by one Nicholas Tchinkine of Moscow Russia with Barker Torpedo coachwork specified. Due to the outbreak of hostilities, the car never made it to Russia & instead was commandeered by the War Department for use o the Kings Messenger service between Calais & the front lines. In 1919, Its days in military service over, '9AD' was offered for sale at the Olympia auction organised by the Ministry of Munitions on 5th September 1919. The sale contained quite a number of government requisitioned cars that were now surplus to needs. 9AD was one J A Wallace Esq of Hampstead, London NW and he is its first recorded owner from 26th August 1920. Around this time the car went back to Barker & had its current body fitted; that of an open drive limousine in which form it arrived in America. The car was purchased in this iteration by the famous circus impresario, John Ringling who kept the car along with several other Ghosts at his Sarasota Mansion Casa d'Zan. Upon his death, the car passed to the Sarasota Auto Museum & thence to the Imperial Palace collection before being acquired by the late Helmut Krogman of Lubeck in Germany. We first handled this car about 10 years ago. The engine had been fully rebuilt but not correctly set up. We collected the car in Lubeck, had Carl Ford of The Priory Vintage Car Co, do a full set up & service on the car dramatically improving its running & operation. After the service, we drove the car back to Lubeck by way of the then running Esbjerg ferry with the car running better & better with every mile put on it. The car is finished in a deep & lustrous purple making for a very striking machine. The interior is a full-on brocade affair with bedford cord & is in fine order. Black leather is installed up front to the drivers seats. Having been used in Germany the car is fitted with discreet flashers & indicators to satisfy the German MOT equivalent, the Tuff test. Under the bonnet the car is beautifully detailed with all the brass & copper polished to a high shine, The engine has covered few miles since the rebuild so has superb compression & runs strongly & silently as one might expect. It is ready for immediate use & is a large tall imposing car that always draws attention to itself. 1911 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost open drive Limousine by Grosvenor. Chassis number: 1524 Registration number: BF 8376 Just arrived with us & being serviced after a comprehansive rebuild & brand new interior trim. Chassis 1524 has had its mechanics thoroughly & fully restored with many thousands of hours having been put into it. The car was found in a dilapidated state in Australia & has had a painstaking reconstruction of the Grosvenor coachwork completed using contemporary pictures of the car when it was 2 years old. The exterior of the car is a very very dark aubergine/black "Dutch Pink" configuration. It appears black in some lights, whilst in others the two tone vertical stripes are clearly visible. All decorative woodwork is finished & replaced as required to brand new condition. The front of the car is trimmed in Aubergine leather matching the coachwork. To the rear is purple bedford cord with custom made Brocade window pulls & door accents to complete the ensemble. A superb cocktail cabinet with a fold out occasional table is mounted to the bulkhead. A period Brass footwarmer is stored under the cabinet. The roof of the car is trimmed in West of England cloth with a sunburst motif theme in radiating lines from a cental oval. Purple wilton carpets are fitted front & rear & also cover the footwrmer. RollsRoyce Silver Ghost number 1524 has an extraordinary history: Ordered by Mr A B Wardman of Harrogate in England during August 1910, the purchase order specified a 1911 Type. Mr Wardman did not proceed with his order and received a credit for his deposit of £75, and the timing evidently coincided with plans by Rolls-Royce Director Claude Johnson to introduce the marque to Royalty (British Royalty having favoured Daimler motor cars thereto). 1524 was among three or four chassis specially bodied by Hoopers and sent to the Coronation Durbar of His Majesty King a George V in Delhi, India, on 12th December 1912. It appears that the cars were used to convey Royalty during 1911 and 1912. Early in 1912 the cars were returned to England and offered for sale at the factory. 1524 was offered with a factory record stating that it was sold as is, second-hand, ex'RoyaIty, with Hooper limousine "like the the Kings. The car was purchased by Mr Charles Angas of Collingrove at Angaston in the Barossa Valley of South Australia. Mr Angas used 1524 in London from his Belgrave Square residence at which time a Grosvenor body was fitted before shipping it to Australia in 1913 to join his stable of earlier Rolls-Royces. In Adelaide, the car was used between the Barossa Valley and the Angus family residence in Brougham Place, North Adelaide. As was his, and many other early motor car owners, habit, Charles Angas named his cars, christening 1524 The Dreamer, other family cars having held the name Silver Dawn. The usual Rolls-Royce Spirit of ecstasy mascot, by 1911 available from the factory, was replaced in this case by a fine bronze bust of a girl, which was recovered from the Angus family during restoration so that it could be reinstated on the car that it originally adorned. In June 1923, the car was returned to the factory for a major overhaul. After four months 1524 was brought back to Australia having had a variety of factory upgrades and maintenance to the running chassis and ancillaries. Interestingly an experimental factory fitted external crank damper may still be found to the front of the engine. By 1981, the car was back on the road and was the joint overall winner of the Rolls- Royce Concours at that years Federal Rally held in Shepparton, Victoria. Further mechanical work followed including detail engineering work exceeding some 5000 hours by Mr Dennis Cathcart of EDEC Industries in Sydney which greatly enhanced the operation and authenticity of this important Royal car. Under the ownership of Mr Malcolm Johns, 1524 has been returned as close as possible to its original specification with meticulous attention having been applied to the mechanics & ancillary units of the chassis so that it is now is superlative order. Rolls-Royce attempted for many years to persuade the British Royal family to order Rolls-Royce motor cars. This vehicle is certainly one of the very first to have been used in Royal capacity and with its important Angus family history is unique in this respect. The car has no self starter as indeed it did not when new. Starting from the handle is easily achieved after priming the fuel sysem & giving a couple of preliminary turns on the starting handle. A modern starter could be fitted should the new owner so desire. The engine runs very quietly & unusually is fitted with an experimental external crank damper; the first such time I have seen one. 1911 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. Chassis number: 1645 Registration number: B58-282 (B Columbia) A spectacular Silver Ghost carrying its original & grand Hooper Limousine bodywork. This car has been under the current ownership for over a decade during which time it has done several thousand mile plus tours & also won prizes. The car has been shown at Pebble Beach in recent years. The car engine has had a recent overhaul including High Compression Pistons, rebored blocks, etc etc, from noted specialist Steve Litton. The correct Charles A Vanderveld (C.A.V.) dynamo has been refurbished & is fitted. The car sits on straight sided tyres mounted to Warland artillery wheels, but has a set of beaded edge versions available with the car. The car has won a price recently for "Quietest Ghost Engine"; a testament to the quality of the rebuild. The car comes with reprints of the Hooper catalogue for 1912 that shows illustrations of the cars body, and the Booklet Running Instructions for the C.A.V. Dynamo Lighting and Starting System. All four doors can be locked, which makes the car much better for keeping ones luggage safe when on a tour. The front compartment is quite spacious, and the seat is comfortable for longer drives. The steering is reasonably light, and the brakes work well but only on the back wheels. The foot brake is very powerful and needs only a light touch. The governor works properly, and the clutch is silky smooth when oiled. The car has large windows and good mirrors, and is easy to drive in traffic, change lanes etc. There is a large opening vent below the windshield, which keeps the car from getting too warm on warm days. The windshield can be opened too, which is helpful when the car is stationary or moving slowly. The car has an extensive history file with multiple pictures from the 1960's onwards & also one pre-ww1 photograph. The car is due to be used for the coming summer season in British Columbia prior to shipping over to us in September. It is available for inspection & purchase prior to then & will ship anywhere in the world from British Columbia if purchased prior to arriving with us. We will be taking more extensive pictures of the car in Vancouver around March/April time. The car comes with most of the essential tools, a hard-cover Owners Manual and all the relevant Silver Ghost Association publications. .. 1922 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Henri Binder Victoria hood. Chassis number: 70YG Registration number: XO275 A magnificent silver ghost coming to us out of 4 decades of ownership where it has been dry stored in a small collection of cars. The last deceased owner purchased it from a man who had disinterred it from a French barn where it had been laid up during the war years with its wheels stored elsewhere to stop it being requisitioned. The coachwork is by famed Parisian Coachbuilder Henri Binder. The car has a large victoria style hood to the rear which we were unable to erect fully during photography due to the impediment of a low beam in the garage. A further hood connects the windscreen to the front of the Victoria affording rudimentary protection to all occupants. The car was parked & mounted on axle blocks many years ago when in fine running order having had an engine rebuild prior to lay up; We discovered it sitting next to a 1973 11,000 mile Jaguar e type which also was unused & purchased in 1977 with just 10,000 miles on the odometer. We are about to service & fully recommission the car in the next weeks & will also conduct our usual full photographic shoot once the service is complete & had a full valet. The car has wonderful patinated Japanned black leather to the seats & hood. Paint is a dark maroon over black & is in very good order. The door handles are of particular note, being wrought in a beautifully ornamented manner. Watch this space as the work & photography progresses. 1922 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Tourer Registration number: AJ8865 Chassis number: 12YG A magnificent Rolls Royce Silver Ghost tourer that has remained under the last ownership since 1991. The car has just arrived & has been dispatched to The Priory Vintage Car Co for a full service prior to running in the forthcoming 100 miles of Amsterdam at the end of the month. Once the car returns we will finish detailing it & properly photograph it. The car has a post war barrel sided torpedo touring body fitted to it made from Aluminum over traditional ash framing. The body is well executed & rakish in the extreme. The paint is recently redone in Burgundy over Black so presents beautifully. To the interior is sumptuous newish buttoned maroon leather to all the seating surfaces with maroon carpets to the rear & black rubber floor matting to the front. A side mounted spare sits on the running board as does a cabinet maker built open dovetailed battery box. The mahogany dash board contains a full quotient of period instrumentation. Mechanically the car is very very sound having been looked after by the current owner who cut his teeth at Romseys famed Jack 'O Lantern garage. The engine is very quiet & starts readily. Oil pressure is excellent & the car runs cool. A full-length split tonneau cover comes with the car. The hood of black canvas is in good condition & erects easily for inclement motoring. A hood bag keeps the ensemble tidy when in the down position. All in all a wonderful car in super order throughout & ready for extensive touring. ..
