Vintage and Prestige are proud to offer this 1936 Rolls Royce 35-30 Sedanca De Ville by Gurney Nutting For Sale. Registration no: DLH 892 Chassis no: GXM25 The Rolls-Royce 25/30, built between 1936 and 1938, is an updated version of the 20/25 featuring a larger engine than had been fitted to the earlier model which provided more power to compensate for the over-size bodies being built. The in-line six cylinder, overhead valve, engine was similar to that used in the 20/25 but increased in capacity to 4,257cc. A single proprietary Stromberg downdraught carburettor replaced the Rolls-Royce one and magneto ignition was no longer fitted but a spare ignition coil was provided. The riveted chassis had rigid front and rear axles suspended by half elliptic springs with hydraulic dampers. Braking was on all four wheels assisted by a mechanical servo with separate rear brakes fitted for the handbrake. Also fitted was the traditional Rolls-Royce radiator with vertical louvres, the angle of which was controlled thermostatically to control engine cooling. Only the chassis and mechanical parts were made by Rolls-Royce. The body was then made and fitted by a coachbuilder selected by the owner. In the early 1930s, all luxury marques were delivered as rolling chassis to one of many marque-approved coachbuilders for completion. This example, chassis GXM25, was bodied by Gurney Nutting in the Sedance De Ville design. The rolling chassis GXM25 and the 4250cc engine were driven out of the Rolls-Royce factory on July 4th, 1936 and handed to famed coachbuilder Gurney Nutting to be delivered on 5-9-1937. The Rolls-Royce is believed to have only three previous custodians, one of which owned the car as part of a Rolls-Royce collection in Kent, which twenty or so other examples from the marque. Finished in deep blue over black, with grey leather interior piped in blue, this example has the wonderful Sedanca canvas top, unfurling from the hidden compartment in the front of the roof. The rear compartment has one occasional seat folding from the bulkhead, on the opposite side is a fold out footrest. Between the two is a small cocktail cabinet with twin glasses and a decanter. Twin vanity alcoves are mounted with recessed mirrors reading lights. All interior woodwork is in fine order. Acceleration is responsive, with the car feeling light and extremely manoeuvrable with firm but supple suspension. The car starts instantly and runs silently, with the radiator shutters operating perfectly via the thermostat. The owner has covered many miles in the car without any problems, and with a new overdrive, allowing the car to cruise at 65 to 75mph. All tools are in their appointed place and the original Bakelite coil covers are also correctly mounted. The car comes to us with a large history file, tools and original handbook. 1938 Rolls-Royce 25/30 with Coachwork by James Young. Believed first owned by the actress Ann Todd who starred alongside Gregory Peck in the Alfred Hitchcock film The Paradine Case in 1947. Having been part of the well known Linegar collection for many years. She was then purchased in 2012 where as her new owner then proceeded to undertake a total refurbishment, both externally and internally to a very high standard and totally overhauling all her mechanics to bring her back to her original glory. A superb example in every respect now just fully serviced and fitted with a brand new set of Goodrich tyres, including her side mounted spare. She has her original old style log book and her operational manual. In our opinion is possibly one of the nicest examples on the market, sensibly priced.

  • Auction: 11th/12th Oct 2018 - RM Sotheby's - Hershey

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys' Hershey event, 11 - 12 October 2018. Offered from the Calumet CollectionA one-off design; the only Lancefield-bodied saloon on a 25/30 chassisUnusually well proportioned, attractive, and sportingWell-maintained older restoration, in very good conditionOffered with full road and hand tools, as well as copies of factory build recordsAccompanied by history and condition report from Rolls-Royce historian Diane BrandonClassic Car Club of America (CCCA) Full Classic This car is the only Rolls-Royce 25/30 produced with a saloon body by the renowned British coachbuilders, Lancefield. Many saloon bodies on the 25/30 were of rather awkward proportions, as coachbuilders were unused to working on such a short chassis; Lancefield, however, succeeded in producing a beautiful little four-door car, with a well-shaped roofline and fenders. Specifications included a sliding sunshine roof; a single side-mounted spare, for use mainly touring in the UK and on theEuropean continent; as well as built-in jacks in both the front and rear. The car was originally delivered to Daimler Hire Ltd., a high-end rental firm in London. By the early post-war era it had moved to the U.S., where its owners included Sterling Cook of Oxford, Ohio, and Glenn Grismere. Its present restoration was completed in the early 1990s and is overall well preserved, with an elegant Brooklands Green finish with correctly applied pinstriping, properly fitted leather upholstery, and interior woodwork of a period-correct finish, not too shiny as is often seen on todays restorations.Equipment includes a Lucas metal visor and P100 headlamps, dual driving lights and side lights, and wonderful Art Deco interior fixtures, including the correct original smokers companions in the rear. The taillamps are a 1950s installation to comply with the MOT rules of the time. Overall presentation is very good, with only minor wear as would be found on an automobile that has, indeed, been driven and enjoyed byits owners.Accompanied by copies of its build records, complete sets of road and hand tools, and a detailed historical and condition report from noted Rolls-Royce historian Diane Brandon, this is an unusually handsome little 25/30 a charming and loveable addition to any stable of pre-war British cars.To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/hf18.
