1939 Packard Super Eight Touring Sedan Chassis number: 1 272-2339 Registration number: 125XUP A concours example with over 200k spent on its restoration. You have to see this car to appreciate how good it is. The car needless to say, is in nut & bolt brand new condition. This Packard has covered less then 1000 miles since restoration & really ought to be run in gently over the next 500 miles. The car was restored by Marque specialists AL Pruett & sons of Glen Rock, PA. This Packard Super Eight is finished in unmarked Packard Blue with a Grey/Blue Broadcloth interior. Optional equipment when new included Overdrive, a Heater, Radio, Luggage Rack, Dual Side Mounts, Front Grille bars & additional lights. The engine bay is beautifully detailed & like new. The motor puts out some 130hp & 225 Lbs Ft of Torque. It is spacious powerful & advanced for the year with 4 wheel hydraulic brakes. Indeed it is amazing to step out a derby Bentley or Rolls & into this as it make one realise just how far ahead of the game Packard were at that time. This was the first year of production for the "Three on the tree" Column gear change. A detailed appraisal report is available with the car along with a replacement valuation cost of £150,000 and a copious history file. The car is spacious in the extreme, fast, comfortable & well able to run in modern traffic conditions. Indeed the last one of these we sold in similar condition was driven straight to Switzerland without missing a beat. A very rare Packard "shovel nose" produced for just two years. The powerful 5.2 litre straight eight is a paragon of smoothness & power. This car has had extensive works done to it starting with an engine rebuild & culminating in fresh paint in dark blue & black along with a retrim in pale blue leather. As a result the car is in superb order starting readily & showing a surprising turn of speed in modern traffic conditions. The coachwork is Packard's own 2 door coupé with a dickey seat fitted to the rear. About 500 examples are thought to have been produced. Long, low & rakish it typifies Americana of the period in the best Capone style. In addition to the fresh paint & interior, new tyres have also been fitted. The brakes have also had a thorough overhaul as has the fuel tank & assorted engine ancillaries. A new clutch was also fitted during the refurbishment process. The car is thus ready for extended touring & long distance use. Only when you drive one of these Packard's do you realise quite what superb cars they are.

  • Auction: 5th/6th Oct 2017 - RM Auctions - Hershey Sale

To be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sotheby's Hershey event, October 5-6, 2017.Estimate:$80,000 - $100,000 USOffered from The Thomas F. Derro CollectionExceptionally rare eight-cylinder modelBeautiful and correct restorationWhile station wagons today recall images of family road trips and surfer dudes, it is easy to forget that up until the 1940s they were more likely to be seen by the stables than in suburbia. Before World War II, the station wagon was exactly that, the vehicle used to carry servants, luggage, and occasionally the employer and owner of same, between a palatial estate and the train station. It often occupied a carriage house that was shared with at least one sumptuous limousine, usually a Packard. It is no wonder, then, that in the mid-1930s, as it enlarged its model line to fight the Great Depression, Packard saw fit to combine the two.The Packard Station Sedan debuted in mid-1937 and was offered on both the six-cylinder 115C (later One Ten) and eight-cylinder OneTwentychassis through 1942. Bodywork was usually provided by the well-regarded Hercules Body Company, using framework of light-colored white ash with insert panels of dark mahogany. The elegant Packard Blue Station Sedan offered here was originally delivered in Poughkeepsie, New York. It was restored in the late 1980s, an AACA National First Prize winner in 1991, and became part of the Derro Collection in 1993. Typical of the Derro cars, the Station Sedan is remarkably well preserved, with its deep, shining paintwork, excellent complementary blue upholstery, and beautiful furniture-like woodwork and tight rubber roof covering, all appearing crisp and fresh. Options include the proper amber driving lights, as well as the unusual covered dual side-mounted spares, which were a rarity on wagons; push-button radio; and Signal-Start turn signals, ideal for touring. This as now, would be a splendid complement to the Packard limousine or touring car in one's garage, or the perfect vehicle for the "summerplace" orsunny winter hideaway. • Auction: 5th/6th Oct 2017 - RM Auctions - Hershey Sale

To be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sotheby's Hershey event, October 5-6, 2017.Estimate:$150,000 - $190,000 USSmooth, reliable Packard Deluxe EightIconic Raymond Dietrich designFresh top-quality restorationOn 14 June 1923, Packard Motor Car Company introduced the Single Eight as a successor to the long-running Twin Six V-12. At 357.8 cubic inches, it displaced some 15 percent fewer than the big flagship powerplant, but produced 95 percent of its horsepower. More important than that, however, was its design. A seminal breakthrough with its two-plane crankshaft, it set the pattern for all straight eights from that time onward. Earlier inline eights were essentially two four-cylinder engines mated end-to-end. Inherent to this design is a "secondary imbalance" caused by two of the pistons always moving together. This creates a rocking motion at idle and roughness at high rpm. By turning a portion of a flat-plane crankshaft, that for the four middle cylinders, 90 degrees, Packard engineers made theSingleEight smooth and silent. The result was so successful that from 1925 the designation "Packard Eight" was sufficient. The Sixth Series Packards were introduced on 1 August 1928. All Packards were now Eights, the six-cylinder models having been discontinued. The Model 645 Deluxe Eight, the top of the line, spanned an impressive 145½-in. wheelbase, and was powered by a 384.8-cu. in., 105-bhp engine. There were two open touring cars in the 645 line, designated Phaeton, Style 371, and Sport Phaeton, Style 373. Both accommodated five passengers, but Style 373 had a Tonneau Cowl, a hinged panel enclosing the rear seat and equipped with a windshield for its passengers. It represented the ultimate in comfort for an open Packard body. Designed by Raymond Dietrich, it was, like a number of offerings in the catalogue, built in Packard's own body factories. This Packard 645 Sport Phaeton had been restored when purchased by the current family, noted Packard connoisseurs. They then re-restored it to itscurrenthigh standards, with the assistance of trade specialists cultivated over many years. It presents vividly in brilliant red, with a matching leather interior. The top is tan canvas. Equipped with Pilot Ray steering driving lights and dual windshield-mounted spotlights, it has dual side-mounted spares and six Firestone High Speed wide whitewall tires. The tip-up Tonneau Cowl, as Packard called its dual-cowl arrangement, has its own windshield for the rear seat passengers, making cool-weather touring a pleasure. Taking pride of place atop the radiator is the iconic Packard "Adonis" radiator cap designed by Edward McCarten. The workmanship is superb, from the flawless paint to the highly detailed engine compartment, the latter complete with a correct Packard accessory Purolator oil filter. It runs and drives spectacularly, having covered only test mileage since restoration. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/.
