1939 Packard Super Eight Touring Sedan Chassis number: 1 272-2339 Registration number: 125XUP A concours example with over 200k spent on its restoration. You have to see this car to appreciate how good it is. The car needless to say, is in nut & bolt brand new condition. This Packard has covered less then 1000 miles since restoration & really ought to be run in gently over the next 500 miles. The car was restored by Marque specialists AL Pruett & sons of Glen Rock, PA. This Packard Super Eight is finished in unmarked Packard Blue with a Grey/Blue Broadcloth interior. Optional equipment when new included Overdrive, a Heater, Radio, Luggage Rack, Dual Side Mounts, Front Grille bars & additional lights. The engine bay is beautifully detailed & like new. The motor puts out some 130hp & 225 Lbs Ft of Torque. It is spacious powerful & advanced for the year with 4 wheel hydraulic brakes. Indeed it is amazing to step out a derby Bentley or Rolls & into this as it make one realise just how far ahead of the game Packard were at that time. This was the first year of production for the "Three on the tree" Column gear change. A detailed appraisal report is available with the car along with a replacement valuation cost of £150,000 and a copious history file. The car is spacious in the extreme, fast, comfortable & well able to run in modern traffic conditions. Indeed the last one of these we sold in similar condition was driven straight to Switzerland without missing a beat. A very rare Packard "shovel nose" produced for just two years. The powerful 5.2 litre straight eight is a paragon of smoothness & power. This car has had extensive works done to it starting with an engine rebuild & culminating in fresh paint in dark blue & black along with a retrim in pale blue leather. As a result the car is in superb order starting readily & showing a surprising turn of speed in modern traffic conditions. The coachwork is Packard's own 2 door coupé with a dickey seat fitted to the rear. About 500 examples are thought to have been produced. Long, low & rakish it typifies Americana of the period in the best Capone style. In addition to the fresh paint & interior, new tyres have also been fitted. The brakes have also had a thorough overhaul as has the fuel tank & assorted engine ancillaries. A new clutch was also fitted during the refurbishment process. The car is thus ready for extended touring & long distance use. Only when you drive one of these Packard's do you realise quite what superb cars they are.

  • Auction: 18th Aug 2017 - RM Auctions - Monterey Auction

To be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sotheby's Monterey event, August 18-19, 2017.Formerly the prized possession of beloved enthusiast Bill BuddigAn exceptional, authentic example, with original chassis, engine, and bodyKnown history from new, including 65 years with prominent ChicagoansAward-winning concours restoration by Fran RoxasAn Eleventh Series Twelve of superb quality in every regardPackard produced about 10 five-passenger phaetons on the Eleventh Series Twelve chassis. The car offered here, no. 731-11, was the second built, and was sold new by Packard of Chicago on 28 February 1934. Its first owner was recorded by historian Edward J. Blend as having been Albert Harris, a prominent local banker, financier, sportsman, and philanthropist, noted in his 1958 Chicago obituary as "a powerful [voice] in shaping the city's history."The Packard's next known owner, Edward Eagle Brown, president of the First National Bank of Chicago, used it as his "summer" automobile; the "winter" carwasthe famous Duesenberg Model SJ town car built for Ethel Mars. It was sold by Brown in the early 1950s to pioneering NBC weatherman, Clint Youle, next passing in 1973 to Bill Buddig, the renowned, beloved collector and enthusiast from Illinois. Mr. Buddig's friends and fellow CCCA members, Lee Gurvey and Ray Levy, recall the Packard as being an excellent original car, down to its former owner's initials still on the doors, and that it was driven and enjoyed for some years in its unrestored condition. Mr. Buddig then endeavored to have his great friend Fran Roxas restore his favorite car, in the original color scheme and options, an easy job given its complete, original condition.Following its restoration by Mr. Roxas, this car was a Classic Car Club of America Senior Premier winner, no. 1673, as well as Best in Class at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, among other honors. It was eventually sold by Mr. Buddig's estate in 1999 to the late Bill Jacobs, from whom it was purchased by thecurrentowner.Recent inspection by an RM Sotheby's specialist showed that the Packard's restoration still presents in virtually show-ready, concours condition, thanks to the excellent care that it has received both before and during its current ownership. Further, inspection of the frame and engine numbers indicates that both are original and "matching." Accessories such as covered dual side-mounted spares, a correct Packard luggage rack and trunk, and the factory's standard "feathered bail" radiator cap add to the wonderfully authentic, correct appearance."Timeless Lines Add to Desirability," was how Mr. Blend captioned a photograph of the 1107 Twelve phaeton. Known history, wonderful purity, and an impeccable restoration add even more, and make this car one of the finest survivors from Packard's greatest year.
