The Mercedes Benz 190SL is a two door grand touring convertible with removable hardtop. The SL debuted at the New York Auto Show in 1954 before going into full production in early 1955. The Mercedes 190SL took many of its design cues from its big brother the more expensive race-bred 300SL, the road going version of the Mille Miglia winning SLR. The two cars however, were quite different. Whilst the 300SL had a purpose-built tubular spaceframe (W198), its smaller sibling was built on a shortened version of the 'Ponton' saloon (W121) platform, which was of monocoque construction. The 190SL also boasted an all-new engine - an over-square SOHC straight-four unit of 1897cc that produced 105bhp, which was sufficient to propel the car to a maximum speed of 112mph. The engine was coupled to a manual four-speed gearbox. The suspension comprised double wishbones and coil springs at the front and a coil-sprung swing axle at the rear. Steering was provided by means of a recirculating ball system and braking bypower-assisted drums all round. Built to the highest standard, the 190SL featured a well-appointed cockpit offering comfort for its occupants and relatively generous luggage space. Options included a third seat placed transversely behind the front ones which was big enough to carry an adult. The 190SL continued in production until 1963, when both it and the 300SL were replaced by the 230SL (W113). This superb Mercedes Benz 190SL featured here, chassis no. 121040-10-023314, and offered exclusively by Autostorico was originally delivered new in Germany. Being a European specification car it was delivered with the rear transverse seat option not allowed by the federal specification cars imported to the USA. Recently the subject of an outstanding and painstaking ground-up restoration, this 190SL is in immaculate condition throughout and drives as well as it looks. Finished in the archetypal combination of Mercedes Silver Metallic with Blue leather seats and upholstery this 190SL is the perfect blend of style and build quality. This example is probably one of the finest on the market today and enhanced Mercedes reputation for elegance and a decent turn of speed. Viewing strictly by appointment only.

  • Auction: 20th/21st Sept 2019 - RM Sotheby's - The Saragga Collection

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys' The Sáragga Collection event, 20 - 21 September 2019. Delivered new to PortugalOne of just 45 built for the final year of productionStately black-over-grey colour combinationRetains its original engine Often referred to as the Adenauer Mercedes after its most prominent customer, German chancellor Konrad Adenauer, the 300 was not only a significant technical achievement, but also an important milestone in the rebuilding of the Daimler-Benz company. Introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September 1951, the stately Type 300 was the first Mercedes-Benz model aimed squarely at the North American market, and it was not surprising that the 300 showed American influence in a number of areasmost notably in its hardtop roofline. Overall production ceased in March 1962, making it the last of the separate chassis Mercedes-Benzes to be built. In total, just 3,077 300 ds were built from 1957 to 1962, including just 45 in 1962. Photocopies of itsoriginal Portuguese registration show that this car was delivered new to Portugal in 1962 and still retains its original engine. Finished in black over a grey interior, this 300 d is both charming and stately.
