An early and desirable Series I Elan Drophead Coupé Approximately only 680kgs and fitted with a DOHC 1558cc engineRestored sympathetically by people who know what they are doingSupplied with a new MoT, a UK V5c, and a file of invoices The original Lotus Elan (Type 26), was first introduced in 1962 as a roadster and replaced the elegant, but unreliable and costly to produce, Lotus Elite. It was the first Lotus road car to use a steel backbone chassis with a fibreglass body and in the early days, Elans were also available in kit form for home assembly but predictably that didn't last long. As is often the way, the Elan evolved through a number of iterations before manufacture ceased in 1973. These developments mainly concerned comfort and civility but all through its life the essence of the Elan didn't change. A technologically advanced DOHC development of Ford's proven `Kent' engine, bored out to 1558cc (commonly known as the Twin-Cam) provided the propulsion, whilst cutting-edge features suchasall-round disc brakes, fully independent suspension and nimble rack and pinion steering provided agility and handling that was simply amazing compared to the opposition.Colin Chapman proudly announced in the launch literature that 'We wanted to build you a fun car..'; a brief he achieved with vigour thanks to the fact that his unequalled talent for vehicle set-up was never more prevalent than in the Elan's handling. Exciting paintwork colours were introduced such as Carnival Red, Pistachio Lime Green and the delectable Lotus Yellow and the Elan became the 'Darling' of the High Street in the mid-sixties.Offered here is a rare and beautiful example of a Series I Lotus Elan drophead coupe, first registered on the 7th July 1964. Our vendor, a chartered surveyor by profession, discovered this car in 2014 in a barn on one of his site visits and, after some negotiations, persuaded the previous owner to part with this very early car. It had been languishing for some time and consequently neededacomprehensive restoration. Our vendor has been involved in motorsport in his spare time for many years and had experience of the abilities of the team at Startline Services so they were entrusted with returning the Elan to life. The car was totally dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up using as much of the original as possible and refurbishing components where necessary. Every Elan needs a new chassis at some point and that was obviously the place to start with new parts being sourced from the usual Lotus specialists, including Paul Matty and Mick Miller Lotus. The engine was removed and sent to Owlesbury Crankshaft Services where the cylinder block was rebored and the crank reground. Once back at Startline Services, it was re-assembled with a new clutch and installed back into the chassis. The GRP body was carefully repaired, with particular attention being paid to those areas where Series 1 cars are known to 'stretch', and was then treated to a full respray in Lotus Yellow. Apart fromthedoor cards, the car's trim had survived well and was re-installed. The wooden dashboard was totally restored at considerable cost and now looks fabulous. The front and rear suspension and brakes were rebuilt and the car was finally put back on the road. Our vendor had been keen to keep the Elan looking as original as possible and one of the best things about the Elan is that nearly everything is available from specialists with Paul Matty, in particular, retaining a huge quantity of new /old stock for these delightful little cars. Supplied with a UK V5c and a new MoT prior to the sale, this lovely early Elan is exactly what the doctor ordered - an iconic British Classic looking just as Mr Chapman intended.

A desirable UK right-hand drive Elan S4 drophead coupeComprehensively restored by the vendor over past 6 years Supplied with a UK V5c, invoices and specialist booksBarely driven since rebuild, so will need a period of `running in'In 1962 Lotus launched a legend, the new and ground-breaking Lotus Elan. Following on from the Elite, the new car offered improved handling and better performance. Below the bonnet sat a new 1558cc, twin-cam four-cylinder engine which would become a legend in its own right, powering other classic Lotus models including, of course, the Cortina.``To say that driving the Elan is immense fun is almost an understatement. It is a car which keeps young men young and makes old men younger...'' `Motor'The savvy engineering didn't stop with the engine, the Lotus Elan also features a very strong steel backbone chassis on which is mounted, like a saddle, a GRP body plus 4-wheel disc brakes and independent suspension all round. It's not a coincidence that the Elan has enjoyedsignificant success in motorsport and this is still evident by the large numbers currently involved in historic racing. Production volume of the Elan S4 was about 3,000 cars in total. This particular car is a 1970 Lotus Elan S4 Drophead Coupe finished in Lotus Yellow with a black interior. In 1982 the car was taken off the road to be renovated, however, it would appear the task was too great for the owner at the time and it was sold to another chap in Ealing, who then moved to Cornwall and took the car with him. A busy career and the arrival of children meant the little Lotus remained dismantled, however, our vendor successfully purchased the Elan six years ago and has since spent the time restoring it to its former glory. The body was removed from the chassis and stripped to its gel coat, repairing imperfections and re-laminating where required and the underside treated with Body Shutz for stone protection, before sealing and painting with a two-pack solid Lotus Yellow (L07). A new Lotuschassis wassought and galvanised before painting black. The suspension was reconditioned whilst the brakes were completely renewed to include; new discs, callipers, pads, brakes lines, braided Goodridge hoses and a new servo. The original engine was re-bored and fitted with forged pistons and the crank re-ground before the engine reassembled with a new water pump, fuel pump, oil pump, core plugs, and a new clutch. The gearbox and differential, were sent away to a specialist for reconditioning as required. Engine cooling was attended to with a new heavy-duty radiator and hoses whilst the engine breathing benefitted from a new full stainless steel exhaust system. The interior was fully re-upholstered, new carpets fitted, new doors seals and rubbers as well as a new hood and a Colin Chapman steering wheel. There are many other new items on this beautiful car, perhaps too many to list.Supplied with a V5c and a file of invoices from marque specialists such as Paul Matty, along with photographic records ofthe wholerestoration, this Elan will require a running-in period as it has barely been used since being put back on the road. After many hours of hard graft, this Elan is now looking fantastic and is a great example of a lovely sixties classic, which is both a fun, sunny-day convertible and a thoroughbred sports car with unrivalled handling.

![CDATA[Introduced in 1962, the Elan featured a simple but effective steel backbone frame and all-independent wishbone suspension which used a modified Chapman Strut, as developed in Lotus Grand Prix cars, at the rear. Rack and pinion steering was sourced from the Triumph Vitesse and there were Girling disc brakes all round. The Elan's engine was a highly modified 1498cc (later 1558cc) Ford Cortina unit incorporating Lotus's own twin camshaft cylinder head and both the gearbox and differential came, likewise, from Ford. Introduced in November 1964, the S2 featured numerous detail styling changes and improved brakes. As one would expect given its background and specification, the Elan proved to be a highly capable circuit racer and, capitalising on the numerous successes achieved by privately entered cars, Lotus introduced their own version, the '26R', in 1964. This S3 was not registered until 1980 when it had a Lotus factory approved Christopher Neil monocoque body fitted. From previous sale recordresearch, the car may well have been used in competition possibly by the factory prior to that date, the body tub and the rear wings having been modified to accommodate a wider rear track indicating racing specification. Over the years, the car was the subject of considerable restoration including an engine renewal, new front discs as well as many mechanical ancillaries making the car an excellent road going example of this much sought-after marque. The car is in very good mechanical condition all round. Finished in British Racing Green with gold bumpers and black interior, the car is supplied with a Swansea V5C registration document and an MoT test certificate which expires in September 2019. This is a fantastic opportunity to purchase what is surely a fast appreciating asset that would put a smile on anyone's face, as all Lotus's should.]]
