  • Auction: 11th-12th Nov 2017 - Silverstone - NEC Classic Motor Show Sale 2017

On 23rd September 1968, Mr. Eric Morecambe OBE - one half of Britain's all time favourite comedy duo 'Morecambe and Wise' - walked in to Charles Follett of Hampstead Ltd. to collect his new Jensen Interceptor MkI Coupe, finished in Crystal Blue with black leather in exchange for £4,500. At the time it was one of the most expensive sports cars in the world, styled by Carrozzeria Touring of Italy - it was roughly double the price of an E-Type and cost more than the equivalent Aston Martin. It was the first car of any significant value that he had ever owned and he was enormously proud of it, as recently confirmed by Eric's chauffeur at the time, Mike Fountain. 'FJH 5G' was to play a significant part in his life story as two months after purchase he was to have his first heart attack in the car whilst appearing in Leeds, aged just 42. On the way to the theatre venue he felt unwell and pulled over to the side of the road to ask for help from one Walter Butterworth, who then drove Eric to Leedsinfirmaryand helped save his life. In recognition of this heroic help, Eric told the story in his own inimitable style some five years later on the Michael Parkinson show, which is now a moment captured for all time posterity thanks to YouTube! It was also the very moment that Silverstone Auctions owner, Nick Whale, heard his late Father say 'That Jensen would be a good car to own one day'.....The rest, as they say, is history.Nick finally tracked down the car many years later in Belgium, albeit offered for sale via a UK dealer. Once research was complete and the car's authenticity confirmed a deal to buy the unrestored and rather sad looking car was eventually secured at £28,500 in 2014. One of just 923 Series I Interceptors built, it is today one of less than 30 MkIs that still survive, making it a rare and collectable car in its own right.Several visits to major Jensen restoration specialists ensued, resulting in the selection of the famous Cropredy Bridge Garage to undertake a full restorationto theconcours standard you see today. Like most restorations, it took three times longer than anticipated and cost three times the original quote! Bills on file, copies of which will be provided to the successful buyer, reach well in to six figures for the full restoration of this important part of British motor and show business history. The car even has its own website - www.ericmorecambesjensen.co.uk - where all the story and all of the pictures of the thorough restoration which included a full engine and gearbox rebuild are available to see.In early 2017, the car was re-united with Eric's son, Gary Morecambe, and also with the heroic Walter Butterworth as part of an excellent documentary on Morecambe and Wise featured on ITV. The unveiling of the car to both Gary and Walter was a very emotionally charged moment as they saw the car fully restored and returned to the condition it was back in the day. They both enjoyed driving it around Silverstone circuit whilst reminiscing about the events onthatfateful day when more poor Eric was taken ill. Both this TV excerpt and the Parkinson interview where Eric refers to the story can be seen on the car's unique website. The car has been enjoyed by Nick and the journey with it has been both emotional and highly satisfying. 'It's a great car to drive. We went to enormous trouble to preserve as much of the original car as possible. This specifically includes the dashboard and steering wheel as I wanted to enjoy the same special view and experience the same atmosphere in the driving seat as my all time comedy hero. To meet the family and restore part of their history, which actually is also part of our National heritage, has been a real pleasure. I am proud of what we and Cropredy have achieved.'The car is matching numbers from new, has an outstanding history file with all correspondence between Eric and the factory, and has been returned to it's original registration number that Eric had, thanks to assistance from the DVLA. It has an MOT until24-6-2018and sits on new tyres having covered just a few hundred miles since being finished by Cropredy some 18 months ago. This is the first time the car has ever been offered for public sale since being restored.

Not only is this a truly exceptional Jensen CV8, it is an incredibly rare, scarce MKI example and a collectors dream. Only 500 Jensen CV8's were ever built 490 in RHD format but only 69 MKI examples were ever built. The MKI CV8 is unbelievably rare and considering only 99 RHD Gordon Keeble cars were ever built, it puts this car into perspective. The CV8 model has been strongly appreciating and in Europe we have seen examples offered over the 100,000 mark already. The CV8 was a super car of its day, powered by a 305 bhp Chrysler 361ci V8 at first, and later by the 330 bhp 383 engine, it was one of the most wonderful cars of its era with true power, impressive handling, comfort, luxury and of course safety. This is car to drive, and its performance and general feel will totally surprise anyone with little experience of the model. It feels many years ahead of its time, and when 1950's and 1960's two door coupe's with performance nowhere near the CV8 can command over 250,000, it really makes these carslook incredibly good value with lots of opportunity to further rise in value.

The Jensen Motor Company was started by Alan & Richard Jensen in 1934 producing Jensen-Fords using Ford V8 chassis. In 1936 they started producing their own cars and some commercial vehicles during the war years. The 541 was first produced in 1953 and the car described below was first registered in 1956. It was acquired by the last owner in 2010 as a 'Barn find' requiring total restoration in order to return it to its former splendor. It was an excellent basis on which to begin as it had only had 5 owners and the mileage was apparently low. The body was removed from the chassis and stripped back to bare firbreglass before being proffessionally repainted to the highest standard in the original Old English White. The chassis was found to be in a sorry state and has necessitated major restoration and once the fabrication was completed it has been correctly powder coated and was returned to perfect condition before the car was re-assembled. The 4 litre, 6 cylinder Austin engine and gearbox wereentrusted to the renowned and sadly missed Dennis Welch who did a fabulous job and the engine has been upgraded to 'Fast road/rally' specification. Other items addressed duing the rebuilding process were steering and brake components all rebuilt or replaced with new, exhaust replaced with a new stainless steel system, all glass and perspex has been replaced and new rubbers fitted, the doors were completely rebuilt using new frames and other componant parts, all of the chromework has been rechromed or replaced, a new wiring loom has been fitted and all electrical components rebuilt or replaced, a new fuel tank has been fitted together with appropriate new fuel lines and new electric fuel pump. A new water radiator has been fabricated to the correct pattern but with additional capacity and all hoses replaced. The car now sits on brand new 16' chrome wire wheels with stainless steel spokes and new Avon Turbospeed tyres. Finally the interior trim has been completely replaced in burgundy Connelly hidewith Wilton carpet throughout and the trimmers work is to the highest standard. If you are seeking a Jensen 541 and you require the best then look no further. This car is sensibly priced at 72,500 and is bound to continue to appreciate.

1974 Interceptor 3 7.2 Automatic Finished in grey metallic with red leather interior 84,000 recorded miles Registered new on 1st February 1974, records show that it was first registered official Jensen dealer T.G.Reynolds Ltd of Cambridge as their demonstrator vehicle. Originally finished in Havana brown but change to the far more desirable shade of metallic grey whilst undergoing a body restoration by the highly regarded Jensen body specialist Colin Holley/C&H Autos in 2006. As testament to the quality of Colin's workmanship, the bodywork is still gleaming over 10 years later. Since then the vehicle has been maintained by renown Jensen specialist Richard Appleyard Engineering from where there are several invoices on file. Since acquisition Avantgarde have carried out a very thorough programme of work which has included commissioning a full re-trim in red leather, extensive under-bonnett detailing which has involved the removal and refinishing/re-plating of many components, the results of which arestunning. A very well sorted Interceptor which benefits from a host of upgrades which bring this vehicle up to date. This includes an uprated air conditioning system which uses a more efficient, modern rotary-type compressor, Fosseway Performance big brake kit and 17' alloy wheels in the original 5-spoke design. A most attractive Interceptor.

1970 Jensen Interceptor II 6.3l Auto Finished in yellow with black leather interior 55,000 miles from new Only one recorded lady owner form new Supplied new by Jensen main agent Newbury Motors Ltd of Halesowen on 22 October 1970. Incredibly this stunning motor car has had only one registered owner since, a local lady who along with her husband completely and utterly cosseted and cherished her. Since arriving with us we have commissioned a full strip-down and bare metal repaint at our trusted prize winning body-shop due to age related marks and imperfections. When stripped back the body was found to be in remarkable order, just as we expected. We also had some brightwork refinished, again not due to damage but minor age related fading, which we wanted perfected. Needles to say the re-fit included many new parts and new seals were used throughout. The results to this lengthy but sympathetic restoration are simply stunning. We have also given it a thorough mechanical check-over & service and canconfirm she drives superbly. This beautiful example comes complete with original service book, owners handbook, factory build sheets, original toolkit and a file of old MOT's and invoices. This car offers a unique opportunity and is a very special example indeed of the rare Interceptor 2.
