We are delighted to offer this remarkably early 1949 alloy XK120 Roadster which has been meticulously restored to every periodically correct detail by CKL. The Cream paintwork is accompanied by a rather dashing Biscuit and Red interior trim and features a perfectly fitting black trimmed hood. The car features some subtle differences from the later production road-going XK120, from the original starting handle, chrome hood frame, door knobs at the front of the doors instead of the back and early non-adjustable hood clamps. To the trained eye, these features are particularly interesting since these designs were part of the prototype stage for very early XK120s. Originally distributed by Hornburg, Los Angeles in August 1949, the car would have likely been ordered by a high calibre individual or perhaps a celebrity. Importantly, being such an impeccably early car, the fact that such valuable materials and resources used to build the car only 4 years after the war should be noted. Some 15 years ago, upon its return to the UK, restoration began. CKL would recently complete the restoration, featuring a full retrim by none other than Mick Turley to the highest possible quality. Maintaining the high standard of restoration work, the XK120 would see around £200,000s worth of time and parts thoughtfully implemented to preserve originality and present to concours standard. The very early studless engine of course incorporates a pair of rare stove-pipe SU carburettors which complete the period look. A particularly interesting detail is that the engine number is in fact stamped on the bell housing, again pointing to the early prototype stages of development. Accompanying the engine is an early type starting handle which is now stored smartly in the boot, along with the tool roll with period tools, spare wheel and jack. The brass clips to secure these items in the boot were measured and designed to be periodically correct for this XK120. Recently involved in a high-profile photo-shoot, showing the remarkable craftsmanship and attention to detail. What we are offering is an outstanding example of what can be achieved to bring a real piece of Jaguars history back to life. This superb Roadster is finished in light blue Jaguar metallic with two tone light and dark blue leather trim, complemented by a dark blue soft top and side screens. This XK120 is an early vehicle with the chrome outside sidelights, steel wheels, hub caps, rim embellishers and rear wheel spats. It drives like new and is in near concours condition. The car was discovered in the USA in a state of disrepair by Michael Erroll who was a long-time Jaguar enthusiast and Chairman of the Surrey Vintage Vehicle Society for 20 years (hence the private reg VVS245 which he purchased and which was sold with the car). The vehicle was repatriated back to the UK in 1989 whereupon it received a ground up restoration body off the chassis, bare metal repaint and retrim etc. This took place from 1989-1993 at a cost in excess of 42000 at that time. There is a full photographic record with the car and the car has travelled very few miles since the restoration. The history folder includes: current V5, previous MoTcertificates, invoices, condition report, write up on xk120s, the photographic record, workshop manual, various write-ups etc. plus factory press release pictures. This car was sold new to the Jaguar Garage Homburg, Sunset Boulevard, LA to be their demonstration vehicle and has been purported to have been owned by the actor Clarke Gable- and it may well have been but we have no cast iron proof. That said this is a beautiful, mint example of the marque and offered at a sensible price for both the condition and the rarity.

Striking FHC in a lovely colour combination Long-term single UK ownership Ground-up restoration over a number of yearsDesirable manual gearbox modelBelieved matching-numbersThe XK120 debuted at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show where the breathtaking roadster caused a sensation with the resulting demand, for what was then the world's fastest production car, taking Jaguar by surprise. The elegant shape was the work of Jaguar boss William Lyons himself, probably based on a few simple lines drawn on a breakfast napkin as were so many of his design ideas, and brought to life by the talented team in Jaguar's Drawing Office many of whom had only recently been been designing nose cones and wing shapes for WWII fighter aircraft. Jaguar expected to sell no more than 200 XK120s in the first year, a volume that wouldn't justify producing tooling for presses, so coachbuilt aluminium was the construction of choice. With bulging order books it quickly became clear that the labour-intensive alloy bodywork wouldhaveto go, and the car was swiftly re-engineered in steel. In a matter of weeks, in conjunction with the Pressed Steel Fisher Company, a new all-steel panelled body was developed, which retained the fabulous looks of the coachbuilt original whilst differing in minor external details. The car's heart was, of course, the fabulous XK engine, a 3.4-litre 'six' embodying the best of modern design, boasting twin overhead camshafts running in an aluminium-alloy cylinder head, seven main bearings, and a maximum output of 160bhp. The XK120 set new standards of comfort, roadholding and performance for a British sports car and, in keeping with the Jaguar tradition, there was nothing to touch it at the price. Once Jaguar had caught up with XK120 Roadster demand and production of steel-bodied examples was running smoothly, it developed a Coupé to widen the model's appeal. Aside from the addition of a roof, the biggest difference between this and the Roadster is the use of a, mostly steel, floorpan in placeofplywood. The car presented here is a 1953 Jaguar XK120 Fixed Head Coupe (FHC), specified new with the desirable manual gearbox. According to the car's accompanying Heritage Certificate, it was a left-hand drive US-spec car, finished in Black with a Red interior and was completed on the 2nd January 1953 before being despatched to Jaguar's legendary New York distributor, Max Hoffman. It was fitted with a manual gearbox which was unusual in a car destined for America. From the Heritage Certificate and physical inspection, the car is thought to retain its matching-numbers status. As an engineer and car enthusiast, our vendor has overseen many thorough Jaguar restorations over the years, enjoying a long relationship with the marque. Now back in the UK, this particular XK120 was acquired as a `project' back in 1994 and did require extensive restoration, but this did not deter our resourceful vendor. Using his own skills and those of numerous specialists, he set about a real `ground-up' renewal ofthechassis, bodywork, and mechanicals (all of which is captured in multiple photographs - a few of which are published here). Due to his advancing years, and possibly enjoying the restoration 'journey' more than the end result, the car is now offered for sale. It's a genuinely useable example, restored thoroughly and presented to a fair standard, perhaps requiring some minor `finishing-off' and some additional `shake-down' miles under its wheels (it has only covered around 50 miles since completion). The mechanicals all appear to be well re-engineered, having been fully refurbished and sounding/running as they should. There is a real purity of design to the XK120, and something quite distinctive and more purposeful about the Coupé over the more commonplace Roadster, especially a standard model on steel wheels, with no spats and a manual box - a drivers' XK120 if you like. Here is a very solid example from long-term ownership, offered at a very tempting guide price.
