1951 HEALEY SILVERSTONE SPORTS CONVERTIBLE RECREATION. The Donald Healey Motor Works were founded by Donald Healey in 1946. The factory was situated in Warwick where all models were produced from 1946 until 1954. Donald had an illustrious competition and engineering career before setting up his own company and all of this extensive experience was bought to bear in all of the cars which carried his name. Several models were produced, using the same chassis, which were then clothed in aluminium, a saloon, drop-head coup and sports bodies. The Running gear in the majority of models was taken care of by Riley Components including the excellent twin-cam 2.5 litre engine. The Silverstone was made between 1948 and 1951 with only one hundred and six being produced in D and E type chassis. The cigar shaped aluminium body was very much based upon the pre-World War II single seat racing cars, and incorporated some quite unique features, possibly the most unique was the spare wheel being placed in a slot inthe rear of the body to act as a rear bumper, the front windscreen which could be lowered into the front scuttle to aid aerodynamics. This particular Healey Silverstone has been created from a Tickford sports saloon. It was built in 1989 using a shortened Tickford Healey chassis, using a correct Riley twin-cam 2.5 litre engine, four speed gearbox and 4.2 ratio back axle. The chassis and running gear were then dressed in a glass fibre body which was made from moulds taken from D32. Since its completion in 1989, SSU 183 has been owned by possibly the most well-known Silverstone historian and racer, Chris Berens. SSU 183 was in Mr Berens ownership from late January 1993 until the mid to late 1990s, at the same time as owning SSU 183, Chris also owned and raced the genuine Silverstone D51. SSU 183 was initially purchased as a spare car to D51 but he subsequently kept the car to complete as it performed so well on hill climbs with the 4.2 ratio rear axle. This car SSU 183 is a well known car to theAssociation of Healey Owners Club, and appears on their register(copy of document on file in its history folder). This means SSU 183 would be eligible for historic racing and hill climbs and with genuine Silverstones. Healey Silverstones are now commanding six figure sums, in fact one sold recently at Silverstones Auctions for well over 200k. So this Healey is surely a most worthy alternative, a great fun car and a car eligible to do some racing or hill-climb events. This car is finished in a deep red with black trim.

  • Auction: 29th-30th July 2017 - Silverstone - The Silverstone Classic Sale 2017

The Donald Healey Motor Company completed its first car in 1945, going into full-time production the following year. The firm's first offering was a 2.4-litre, Riley-powered sports saloon with a strengthened chassis and Healey's own trailing arm independent front suspension. For the 'clubman racer', there was the dual purpose `Silverstone', a model equally at home on road or track. Designed by Len Hodges, the lightweight two-seater body was crafted in aluminum, while the car's purposeful look was enhanced by cycle wings and closely spaced headlamps mounted behind the radiator grill. Another unusual feature was the spare wheel which protruded from its compartment in the tail, thus doubling as a bumper. 'The Motor', when it announced and featured the model in July 1949, described the Silverstone as a ' light `competition type' two seater on offer at the basic price of £975'.The Silverstone was soon making a name for itself in rallying and circuit racing. With Donald himself, together with co-driverIanAppleyard, securing a second in class and second overall in the 1949 Alpine Rally, they were the highest placed British car. Other noteworthy international successes included Peter Riley and Bill Lamb's class win in the 1951 Liège-Rome-Liège Rally, Peter Simpson's 6th place overall in the 1951 Isle of Man Manx Cup Races and Edgar Wadsworth and Cyril Corbishley's victory in the 1951 Coupe des Alpes. Many future stars gained their first track experience in the Silverstone, most notably Tony Brooks. There were two generations of Silverstone's, designated `D-Types' and `E-Types', in addition to two prototype 'X' models. The D-Type had a front anti-roll bar and stiffer springs and retained the Riley 2.5 litre power-plant and rear axle. An updated E-Type, with a wider body and more comfortable cockpit, was introduced in 1950.This 1950 Healey Silverstone, chassis number E64, was first registered on 17th July 1950 with the number plate NUG 918. The original buff log book declares the engine number asB4520,which is stamped on the `Big Four' Riley engine today. In addition, there are tax stamps showing early use from 1950-1955.In 1966 the `Silverstone' was purchased by a Mr P. Jackson and sold again in 1969 to a Mr J.R. Thompson of Northamptonshire for £600. It remained in the county with Mr Thompson in dry storage until 1998, when the current family owners, themselves mechanical engineers, discovered the car in need of restoration. They quickly set about a complete rebuild and nearly all parts were taken off, repaired and restored back to original specification. The body was separated from the chassis and both chassis and aluminium body were repaired as required.NUG 918 was finally finished in 2003. It has been used sparingly since and is now reading just 10,501 miles, which the family owners believe are genuine miles based on the condition of the vehicle when they purchased it. This mileage cannot be substantiated with paperwork but a previous MoT certificate from 1986 does show the odometerreadingat 5,000 miles. Prior to the auction, the vehicle will be serviced and spanner checked. We welcome pre-sale inspections and encourage prospective bidders to contact the office for further details. The Healey Silverstone was a model known for its superior power-to-weight ratio, offering fantastic handling and performance from a car which was a true `giant killer' in the early 1950s. NUG 918 retains a wonderful road presence today and is extremely rare, as 1 of just 105 cars ever built. Silverstone Auctions are delighted to be offering this stunning British sports car at the Silverstone Classic, an event and location that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the Healey Silverstone.
