The Ferrari 365 GT4 BB was introduced in 1971 at the Turin Salon; a major move forward from the outgoing Daytona, most notably due to the mid-mounted flat-12 engine. This change in engine location was Ferrari's attempt to move away from a GT car and more into a supercar; a direct rival for the Lamborghini Miura and subsequently Countach. There were only 400 365 GT4 BBs produced from 1973-1976 before Ferrari moved on to the 512 BB, the updated successor. Not only was the 512 an improvement in terms of usability, but also raw performance, mainly due to the larger 4.9-litre engine with dry-sump lubrication. Further improvements included a higher compression ratio, wider track and tyres to accommodate the 360bhp, capable of reaching 60mph in the mid 5 seconds. Stylistically, the 512 BB remains similar to its beautiful predecessor; twin rear lights and tailpipes being the most notable change, but even moving into the 80s, the Boxer was still one of the most stunning cars available. Less than 1,000 512BBs were produced in total. The stunning example we are offering is finished in its original colour of Nero Daytona. It has recently undergone a fully documented restoration and respray making it one of the cleanest examples on the market. It has just been Ferrari Classiche Certified and also maintains an original owner's handbook, tool kit roll and briefcase.

  • Auction: 24th/25th Aug 2018 - RM Sotheby's - Monterey Auction

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Monterey event, 24 - 25 August 2018. Offered from single ownership since 1988Striking and rare original color schemeFederalized for the U.S. by Shelton Ferrari in 1984Well preserved with original numbers-matching engine and gearbox; only 6,200 original milesIncludes original tool kit and owners manualsFerrari Classiche application submitted in July 2018One of the most exciting 512 BBis to be offered in years Ferrari built upon the success of the 365 GT4 Berlinetta Boxer beginning in late 1976 with the introduction of the 512 BB. The name reverted to Ferraris more typical liters/cylinders nomenclature; the new 512 featured a small chin spoiler in front, exposed driving lights, rectangular rear parking lights, NACA ducts on the lower body sides ahead of the rear wheels, four taillights (in lieu of six), and a tail 1½-in. longer. It offered the advanced and reliable Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injection system for the first time in a 12-cylinder Ferrari, hence the iin its nomenclature. For the Ferrari faithful, the addition of the fuel injection was a welcome change, and the 512 BBi is generally considered to be the most civilized of Ferraris Berlinetta Boxers. The change from carburetors to fuel injection brought about an increase of 20 foot-pounds of torque, helping the engine to feel much more tractable overall. Performance remained extraordinary, and the 512 BBi could reach 60 mph from a dead start in just 5.4 seconds, leading to an estimable top speed of 174 mph. By the time production came to an end and the 512 BBi was replaced with the Testarossa, Ferrari had built just 1,007 examples. The 512 BBi offered here was finished in the unusual, beautiful, and very rare livery of Grigio Scuro over Rosso Bordeaux seats with black piping, a welcome change of pace from the sea of commonly available red examples. Built with left-hand drive and to European specification, it was completed in June of 1984. Soon thereafter it was imported to the U.S. by Shelton Ferrariof Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and subsequently converted to U.S. specifications, including the addition of side marker lights, and federalized for American roads. It was then sold to the original owner, Ronald J. Martin of Miami. The current owner acquired the car in 1988, and it has been preserved in his private collection since. It remains largely original and in a thoroughly remarkable state of preservation, noting only 6,202 miles at the time of cataloguing. The paint and interior are both utterly beautiful, and even the dashboard instruments and switchgear are still in nearly perfect condition. The finishes under the hood and of the chassis are both clean and original, with only minor road dust visible. The car is accompanied by an original tool roll as well as owners manuals in their respective folio. The enthusiast seeking a 512 BBi that truly stands out from the rest need look no further than this superb example, one of the most attractive to be offered in many years. To view this car andothers currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/MO18.

  • Auction: 5th Sep 2018 - RM Sotheby's - London Auction

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' London event, 5 September 2018. French delivery example delivered through Charles PozziBeautifully restored to stunning Blue over Beige colour combinationFerrari Classiche certified; matching numbers throughout Introduced in 1976 as the successor of the 365 GT4 BB, the 512 BB was an evolution of Ferraris first-ever production mid-engine twelve-cylinder road car. Very similar stylistically to its predecessor, the 512 BB featured a front spoiler, NACA vents located right before the rear wheels, two sets of twin rear stoplights (instead of three of the 365 GT4 BB) and the fuel cap was relocated on the left rear fin. A total of 929 carburetted 512 BBs were built between 1976 and 1981.Originally delivered to French Ferrari Importer Charles Pozzi in 1979, finished in the classic Rosso Chiaro (5995190) over Pelle Nera (VM 8500) interior, chassis no. 29943 did not remain in France for long. Like many 512 BBs sold in continental Europe at the time, it was imported tothe U.S. and sold there to its first owner, Charles Johnson of Fort Lauderdale, and imported to the U.S., where it was converted to comply with U.S. regulations by Dick Fritzs Amerispec. It was then sold in 1990 to second owners, Greg and Dan Decaster, who purchased the car as an investment and never used it.In 1996, chassis no. 29943 was sold to its third owner, Richard Resch, who kept the Ferrari for over 20 years. Under his ownership, Lake Forest Sports Cars, an official Ferrari dealership located just outside of Chicago, performed a major engine-out service in 2002, changing the water pump and light system, and put on new cam belts and tensioners. Another major service was done by its fourth owner, Terry Myr of Smiths Creek, Michigan, in 2010 before selling it that same year, and the car was subsequently reimported to Europe. Registered with its current owner in Germany, there, the car underwent a full restoration where it was refinished in Blu over a Beige interior with matching Daytonainserts, truly a beautiful colour combination that suits the lines of the 512 BB perfectly. Afterwards, the car was certified by Ferrari Classiche in 2015, confirming that it retains all of its major original mechanical components. With only 14,000 miles on the odometer, documented history and sound mechanical conditions, the 512 BB is considered by many to be one of the best usable classic Ferraris. Presented fresh from a full restoration in stunning colours and with full Classiche certification, this 512 BB would be a perfect example to show, drive and enjoy, or both!To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/LF18.
