This elegant 4 door Continental is finished in Shell Grey with blue/grey hide interior. This extremely rare James Young Continental not only sports 4 door Flying Spur delicate coach lines, but also benefits from a sunroof. The Continental history is supported by a comprehensive history file and in my view, having specialised in Bentley Continentals for some 45 years, these handful of James Young rarities are very much understated and underval...

1957 Bentley S1 Continental H.J. Mulliner Fastback Chassis number: BC46BG Registration number: 721GUV Body Number: 5955 For sale on behalf of the current lady owner, a picture of whom we have washing the car in a Scotish river in 1968 no less. Provenance does not come any better then this spanning a half century. The car was purchased from Rippon Brothers in Leeds by the current owners father when it was just 10 years old. The car is finished in Masons Black having had a bare metal respray & all body work issues attended to at that time documented by a photographic record. To the interior are the original maroon Connolly hides in fine order throughout. The woodwork has been removed & re-lacquered. The car comes with original bills, green log book & hand book. A massive history file comes with the car showing vast expenditure & an open cheque book approach to maintaining & restoring the car. Indeed the last bill from the esteemed P & A Wood brothers in June of this month comes to no leass then £26,120.88 pounds & is representative of the kind of maintenance the car has regularly received. To drive this car at speed is to understand why they were accorded the Moniker "Continental"; a sobriquet entirely befitting of the car. At 90 to 100 MPH the car is silent, composed & will run all day at such speeds devouring the miles at an uncanny rate of speed. Gear Changes are seamless, the ride supple & tuned. This car was the subject of a magazine article detailing the family's ownership over the years up to the present day pictures of which are on our site. Up until 1957 Bentley had only offered two door Continental style bodies, so to meet the demand of requests from their customers for a more practical four door variant with greater luggage capacity the Flying Spur was born. H.J. Mulliners chief designer George Moseley was entrusted with styling the new four door motor car and his design was so well received that it lasted the entire production of Continental S Type Bentleys until 1966, also becoming one of the coachbuilt options available on the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III chassis. Chassis No BC8GN is one of the very last of the forty nine S1 Continental Flying Spurs produced by H.J. Mulliner in right hand drive, with just a handful of examples bodied following the completion of this particular car in May of 1959. This particular car was supplied by Muskett Bros Ltd to its first owner, Mr G Watson of Peterborough, finished in his chosen livery of sand and sable coachwork with a beige leather interior. Mr Watson kept the car until 1962 when he soldit to Mr J.G. Hill of Liverpool who used the car sparingly up until 1970 when he sold it to Mr M Morgan-Witts. At this time following careful but limited use the car had only travelled 20,000 miles from new. The car was re-painted at some point during Mr Morgan Witts ownership, in two shades of green and acquired for the first time by Frank Dale & Stepsons in 2007. The original beige leather upholstery was quite worn and the coachwork had deteriorated so a full and comprehensive restoration was conducted by ourselves over an 18 month period. Upon our acquisition in 2007 the odometer read 59,000 miles, which is strongly believed to be the total mileage from new. The coachwork was extensively restored, with new floors to the boot and cabin fabricated, along with new sills. Once all of the repairs and rebuilding work were complete, the body was re-finished from bare metal in gunmetal grey. The interior was completely stripped, repaired and then re-trimmed in St James red leather, with grey Wiltoncarpets bound in red and a new grey west of England cloth headlining. The cosmetic works were completed with chrome restoration and re-plating and the woodwork from the cabin being re-finished to showroom condition. Extensive mechanical works were also carried out to ensure the car drove as good as it looked. Chassis reconditioning, engine bay cosmetics and a new set of tyres completed the work. BC8GN comes complete with a substantial history file documenting the previous ownerships and all of the more recent bills during the restoration process. The car was then supplied by us to a known collector who has used and enjoyed it for the past few years, with the odometer now reading just over 60,000 miles. It benefits from all the later upgrades added to the S1 Continental, those being power steering, the 8:1 carburettors and the dual braking system, all of which were original factory fittings. This fine example still presents beautifully and comes with its original handbook, complete tools and adetailed history file documenting the restoration works. Chassis No BC8GN is a grand tourer of the highest order, freshly serviced and prepared for its next fortunate owner.

  • Auction: 16th/17th Aug 2019 - RM Sotheby's - Monterey Auction

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Monterey event, 15 - 17 August 2019. The most desirable body style; one of 31 left-hand-drive examples builtOriginally delivered to Oklahoma City businessman W.T. Hales Jr.Single ownership since 1986; still finished in its original color schemeEquipped with its original engineOffered with sets of road and hand tools The most desirable catalogued body style on the S1 Continental chassis was the drophead coupe by Park Ward, style no. 700. Unlike the majority of Bentley convertibles produced in this era, this style was not an adaptation from factory design stampings, but rather a fully custom body, built from the ground up by Park Wards craftsmen, hand-crafted in aluminum. It is distinguished by smooth, subtle body lines, with the long, fully flow-through fenders that flow from the front to the rear hips, and rear fenders that kick up slightly to form tiny tail fins.Park Ward built this design on only 31 left-hand-drive S1 Continental chassis, and the survivorsare among the most fiercely prized of all post-war Bentleys, featured in some of the worlds finest collections of grand touring automobiles. The example offered here, no. BC14LGN, was originally finished in the timeless, subtle color scheme of Sand and Sable, with beige upholstery and brown top, and outfitted to the ultimate specification with automatic transmission, power top and windows, Radiomobile radio with power aerial, and full Rolls-Royce air-conditioning. It was ordered through the Thoroughbred Car Company of Oklahoma City by local resident William Taylor Hales Jr. Mr. Hales was the son of a major Oklahoma oil and real estate baron who had played a role in developing downtown Oklahoma City and building the modern stockyards. The business address listed on the Bentleys build cards was the familys own Hales Building, while Hales Jr.s own residence was modeled after Jeffersons Monticello.According to the build cards, delivery of the car was made to Mr. Hales at Lille Hall, indicating that theoriginal owner collected the car in Europe. He enjoyed his new automobile around London for twelve days, after which Bentley arranged to drive it to Southampton for its departure to a new home in the United States. The next known owner recorded, in 1984, is James R. Williams, head of Cincinnatis Western & Southern Life Insurance and member of a family that had been Rolls-Royce and Bentley customers back to the days of the Springfield factory. The current owners acquired the Bentley from Williams via Vantage Motorworks in 1986, and it has remained part of their superb collection since. An older but well-presented restoration, still finished in its original color scheme, it features an upgraded radio but is otherwise to its original specifications. Over the years it has been regularly driven and had routine oil changes. The brakes were recently overhauled and a partial new exhaust fitted, while new seat belts were installed several years ago. The car is still equipped with factory road- and hand-toolkits in the trunk compartment, as well as a top boot. This would be a lovely addition to a new owners stable, with a rich history with one of the Wests most interesting families. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mo19.
