Walter Owen Bentley proudly showed his new 3 litre car at the 1919 Olympia Motor Exhibition, the prototype engine having fired up for the first time a few weeks earlier. This was the model which was to become a motor racing legend, with its classical radiator design and the British Racing Green livery, it has become the archetypal vintage sports car. Early success in the 1922 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy where Bentleys finished second, forth and fifth to take the team prize. However, by the mid 1920s, the 3 Litres competitiveness was on the wane, together with the fact that too many customers were fitting unsuitable heavy coachwork led to the introduction of the 4½ Litre. The new 4½ model consisted of the chassis, gearbox and brakes of the 3 Litre model that it was replacing, the engine was, in essence, two-thirds of the six-cylinder 6½ litre unit. The new four-cylinder motor retained the same bore and stroke, four valves per cylinder driven by an overhead camshaft and having a combined block andcylinder head. This matching numbers WO Bentley 4½ litre was fitted with a Vanden Plas, four seat, open tourer body was supplied to its first owner, S K Thornley in May 1928. In July 1928, the car was entered in the Bournemouth Concours DElegance and shortly after, in September, he took the car to France to attend Boulogne Motor Week. In 1932, it was purchased by the owner of Salmons and Sons Coachbuilders, Mr. Fred Salmon, who fitted the current 1928 Drophead Coupé body that he had had especially constructed for his personal use four years earlier and had fitted to his American King chassis. Salmons Coachbuilders was started in the 1820s building horse drawn carriages with their first body on a car in 1898. The firm remained in the family control until becoming a limited company in 1939, then renamed Tickford Ltd. in 1943. In 1955, the company became the home to Aston Martin after the David Brown takeover. This Bentley had a further four owners in the UK over the next twenty years before beingexported to the USA in 1962. By 1981, it was back in the UK and is pictured in the definitive history Salmons and Sons, Tickford Coachbuilders by Dennis Mynard (featured on page 72) outside Aston Martin following the factory restoration. The car was then purchased by our vendors father in 1984 and put into his collection of classic cars based in Wales. During his ownership, he attended a number of Bentley Driver's Club and Vintage Sports Car Club events as well as rallies in the South of France and competing in the Gordon Bennet rally in Ireland. The car has been fitted with an overdrive unit, effective in third and forth gears, to assist in cruising to the long-distance events. Finished in green with black wings, black roof and black leather interior, this 4½ has been kept in dry storage since 2012 and has recently been started and was driven for the catalogue photographs. This Classic WO is supplied with a V5 registration document, old V5 registration papers and a file containing old MoT testcertificates, work receipts going back to 1997, copies of old photographs of the car back in 1928 and after and a copy of Salmons and Sons, Tickford Coachbuilders by Dennis C. Mynard. This is an opportunity to purchase a vintage Bentley fitted with a period body and sufficiently good performance to still be a practical car on todays roads.

Vintage and Prestige are proud to offer this 1927 Bentley 4 ½ Litre Le Mans style Tourer For Sale. Registration no: YV 9987 Engine no: XL3114 Chassis no: XL3113 Factory records show this 4 ½ was originally buils as a H.J. Mulliner coupe and delivered to J.Harsard in April 1928. This Bentley has been under the current family ownership since 1991 when the proprietors bought 2 cars from Tony White in South Africa(Cape Town). Neither car had many body parts, but were otherwise complete. Tony White had originally planned to rebuild them himself but stated that the Bentley 8 Litre, that he had always wanted to buy, came on the market and he needed to sell the 2 4 1/2 litre cars to raise the cash to buy it. Records show that chassis was sent back to the Bentley factory to be realigned, the chassis does also bear an extra number of exp5 which may be an original team car chassis that was used in the construction of the car. Jim Pike from Excell Engineering was commissioned to rebuild both cars as Le Mans replicas, both cars were rebuilt to concours standards, the sister car was subsequently sold with YV 9987 remaining in the family. During the ownership XL3113 has competed in many VSCC events and even won the Measham rally in 2010, she has been well serviced and cared for, including a radiator rebuild by specialists The Vintage Car Radiator company in recent years. We are fortunate enough to have some of the finest WOs pass through our hands each year, this is certainly no exception to the rule. The overall setup is excellent, a well tuned and balanced engine along with a great suspension and brake setup means this WO is definitely one of the best driving cars out there. She pulls along the road nicely and with a proven rally history she is certainly ready for another! Aesthetically YV 9987 is definitely not a polished to within an inch of its life show queen, although we have sympathetically polished some of the brightwork for the photography, this 4 ½ has more of a rugged / patina effect and certainly would not look out of place on any vintage rally. In our showroom and ready for viewing. A large gallery of high-resolution pictures may be viewed on our website. 1929 Bentley 4½-Litre (5.3) Supercharged Tourer Recreation by Graham Moss. Chassis Number: RC2209 Registration number: SV8387 An exacting Recreation by renowned expert Graham Moss finished in August of 2000. This car was built up on an RC chassis using as many original components as possible to ultimate blower Bentley Specification. During the process the engine was upgraded to 5.3 litre capacity with as many original components as possible; when they were not available, they were remanufactured, often to improved, more powerful or durable versions of the original designs. The car was built around a new 130-in. wheelbase chassis, with some original components. Its engine was created from the best available parts, including a new 5.3-liter cylinder block with a new magnesium Birkin Blower racing-style crankcase and winged sump, counterbalanced billet crankcase and connecting rods, modern shell bearings and forged pistons, and a new, correct supercharger. The engine is mated to an original 4½-Litre D type gearbox, with overdrive fitted for easy highway use, and a 3-Litre steering box converted to 4½-Litre specifications. The front axle and steering arms are also original components, as are the back axle casing, the self-wrapping brakes, the instruments, the dynamo and starter motor, and the pedal shaft, while the brake drums and wheels were remanufactured to original specifications. Invoices for Moss work on file deeply detail the level of workmanship invested into this dream project. This Bentley will make a fantastic rally machine or simply a sorted fast road car for the annual dash down to LeMans. We will conduct a full photo shoot upon its arrival in December. ..
