The Austin Healey Sprite MKI was designed by Healey Motor Company within the bounds of their partnership with BMC, the idea being to use as many parts from the corporate parts bin as possible. Most parts came from the A35, front suspension, engine, gearbox and back axle, with the steering rack from the Morris Minor and other off the shelf parts being Smiths instruments and Lucas electrical components. The use of these off the shelf parts helped keep the development costs to a minimum, thereby satisfying the requirement that the car should be cheap to produce. When first launched on the 29th May 1958 the costs was £660.00 including tax and in all a total of 49987 were built between 1958 and 1961. This Sprite was built on the 18th March 1959; the colour was Nevada Beige with Cherry Red interior, engine number 9CU-H/13087 with heater, toughened glass windscreen and rev counter as factory fitted equipment. It was dispatched to Charles Clarke Limited, Shrewsbury on the 3rd April 1959, and first registered on the 13th May 1959. The original registration number is unknown, as it was kept on retention on the 18th July 1974 when FRE 202A was allocated. Christine Hancock, who purchases the car in July 1976 kept it for 31 years. There are 13 MOT certificates, the earliest going back to 16th June 1978 showing a speedometer reading of 22,866 miles, proving that in the 30 years the original engine had covered just 15,235 miles. She sold the car to Sid Locke on the 15th January 2008 and he and his brother in law, Keith Wright restored it with a new body tub from Wheeler and Davies.

![CDATA[Carroll Shelby was a maverick but a maverick with a strong streak of brilliance running through him. Not only a gifted driver but a good engineer, you can thank the British Motor Corporation for the advent of the Cobra. Unpicking the timeline in the late 1950s, it was Mr. Shelbys idea, right at the beginning, to install a small block Chevrolet engine into the Healey 100/4. This plan was on Donald Healeys desk long before a deal was signed up by Herbert Austin. Carroll Shelby then went on to install his engines in the AC Cobra and the rest is history. Imported from the U.S. in 2011 by the vendor, he set about a full ground-up restoration. Whist the engine and gearbox were out, the body was prepared and painted by Healey specialists, Orchard Restorations in East Sussex to classic competition 100M specification; this included twin bonnet louvres, bonnet strap, no bumpers and the classic colour combination of white over dark blue with competition side vents. The 5.7 litre small-block, Chevroletmotor with four barrel Holley carburettors was stripped and found to be as-new and the gearbox replaced with a five-speed Tremec unit. The differential is a Ford 9 Detroit Locker with a 2:8 ratio and stopping is through disc brakes all round and competition callipers at the front. She sits on completely bespoke Jaguar D-Type-style centre lock wheels, knock-on three-eared spinners and new tyres. The suspension has been uprated with rear telescopic shock absorbers and fuel passes through a Holley pump and filter from a bespoke aluminium fuel tank. The interior is well maintained and has been clearly used and the hood and tonneau in good order. Power comes in ample supply but delivery has been cleverly mitigated with equally appropriate ancillaries. None of this hell-fire and damnation is obvious to the casual observer but pull away from the kerb...]]

In the present ownership for the past seventeen years, this 1959 Frogeye Sprite was restored to a very high standard some years ago and has only covered around 1000 miles since. Correctly finished in Cherry Red, with red trim, the car is in extremely good order in all respects and drives very well, having been fitted with a 1275cc engine/gearbox. The rear axle ratio is the 3.9 from the later series Sprite also. The hood, widescreens and tonneau cover are all in first class condition and there is much evidence that the car has been lovingly maintained. One of the most characterful of all British sports cars, the Frogeye is well catered for by the enthusiastic Midget & Sprite Club and benefits from excellent spares availability. Amongst the documentation is a Heritage Certificate plus a log of journeys undertaken in the current ownership. Finished in cherry red with cream leather trim, piped in red with full red carpeting, complemented by a colour coded tonneau cover with cream hood also piped in red. This car is a UK supplied original rhd vehicle with chassis number and registration number matching and is both MOT and road tax exempt. There have been only 3 careful owners in its 58year lifetime. The vehicle was bought new in Sidcup in 1960 and sold to the second owner in 1968. The second owner, due to advancing years and deteriorating health found it too difficult to get in and out of and in turn he sold it to the third owner in February this year. These facts are contained in a letter included in the history folder. It is now being sold by the third owner due to his preference for our Austin Healey 100/6. During the second ownership, the vehicle was garaged in 1981-2001 then totally restored in its original colour scheme. The chassis and registration number are matching 248 ALC. The warranted mileage is 45000 miles from new, however, the car has covered only circa 3000 miles since the restoration. During the restoration a stainless-steel exhaust was fitted and a new gold seal engine was also fitted. The original 11/8 inch carburettors were fitted to the new engine. History folder: spare keys, current and previous V5s, previous MoTs from 2000, MoT related paperwork, gov.uk MoT history report (confirming mileage), engine number documentation, correspondence, aforementioned letter, HPi report, DVLA docs, original green registration document and images of the car. Features: chrome racing wing mirrors, chrome luggage rack, GB badge, leather trim, tonneau cover, toolkit, side screens, quick flip racing petrol cap, centre dash display with amp gauge, Les Leston wood rim steering wheel, chrome kit, wheel rim embellishers, s/s sports exhaust. In essence, what we have here is a beautiful, unmolested 1960 Austin-Healey Frogeye Sprite Mark I with steel bonnet, original features and fittings - fully restored to a particularly highstandard with low ownership and warranted low mileage. A rare creature indeed!
