Background:; Following three years of intense development, Aston Martin choose to unveil their new car for the nineties and beyond, at the International Motor Show in England on the 18th of October 1988. Called the Virage it was one of the sensations of the show attracting enormous public and media attention. The engine, based on the well tried and tested all alloy V8 designed by Tadek Marek with its racing pedigree, was heavily revised with entirely new cylinder heads with four valves per cylinder (last used by Aston Martin in 1921-2) for better breathing and to overcome power losses inevitable with the use of catalytic converters. This is so the engine can run on unleaded fuel anywhere; in effect it is a 'worldwide' engine compatible for all markets. Development of the new four valve heads was undertaken by the renowned experts, Callaway Engineering of Connecticut, United States. The chassis was designed in conjunction with the Cranfield Institute of Technology (one of the leaders in aerospacetechnology). It is torsionally stiffer, lighter and less complex that that of its predecessor, the V8. The body, in true Aston Martin tradition is aluminium, hand beaten by skilled craftsmen to a design by John Heffernan and Ken Greenley. 'From the outset we felt that the car should be an evolutionary successor to the DB4, 5, 6 and V8,' said Heffernan. The front spoiler incorporates an aerodynamically shaped undertray, while the rear features a boot lip spoiler, each combining to produce zero lift. Glazing is flush throughout. A Virage Volante was first displayed at the 1990 International Motor Show, with a 2+2 following in 1992. In 1993 the car was further improved when the four speed version of the Torqueflite automatic gearbox was introduced with variable sport or comfort settings. Summary:; Just as with its V8 predecessor, The Virage Volante has consistently been better received in the market place that its saloon variant. This original left-hand drive, EU registered car is presented in astriking and attractive colour combination and offers a great opportunity for classic Continental touring but with many of the luxuries that we have become accustomed to in modern cars. It is a car to acquire with confidence with the sound evidence of maintenance right up to the present day - this is not a classic where the owner has lost interest, he has continued to invest for the car's future. Vehicle History; This lovely car was originally supplied by Aston Martin to established Aston Martin owner, Professor Dr Muller of Koblenz in Germany. Supplied on a personal export basis, it originally took a UK registration was and remained with the first owner until June 1998 when it was acquired by a Dr Mhlberger in the same city. All the details of the export, the car's original invoicing and the Fahrzeugbrief (German registration document) are in an extensive history folder given to us by the current owner. It was acquired by its third and current keeper in Holland in September 2001 - a classic carenthusiast whose enthusiasm is reflected not only on the detailed care that has been lavished on his Aston Martin but also the car that shares garage space with the Aston - a beautiful 1965 Mercedes Benz 250 SEC. It is also interesting to note that the folder includes TV certificate as well as Dutch RDW Certificates - equivalent to UK MOT Certificates. This is just part of a history that can instil confidence in the intrinsic quality of the car as does the professional appraisal carried out by a Dutch expert in May 2018 that concludes 'Overall Condition - Very Good' and a further inspection carried out by Aston Martin Heritage dealer Aston Martin Michiels in February 2019 which concluded in the same way.

The front spoiler incorporates an aerodynamically shaped undertray, while the rear features a boot lip spoiler, each combining to produce zero lift. Glazing is flush throughout. Summary:; There has a realisation of what outstanding value they represent in the marketplace and a noticeable surge in the interest in the Virage. With its comprehensive ownership and service history, this Swiss registered Aston Martin Virage is an absolute diamond with a hand-built specification that is redolent of what has distinguished the Aston Martin marque over the years. Offered as an original left hand drive, it represents massive value when compared with anything inthe classic car market, inside or outside the Aston Martin stable of models. Vehicle History; This outstanding car was first registered to a Fredy Lienhard of Erlen in Switzerland in November of 1991, purchased from Aston Martin Official Distributor, Fast Line Limited. Fredy, as well as being an accomplished businessman he also has a great record in motorsport competing in single seaters and CanAm and is known through Lista Motorsport. A classic car enthusiast, he is a great guy to have in the log book as the first owner. The extensive history folder includes the original Kaufvertrag (Purchase Contract) as well as original point of sale material like the factory brochure. Under the section of MOT below, what are noted are dates of the ABGAS-WARTUNGSDOKUMENT, a record of Exhaust Emission Checks required under Swiss law. There is also and asterisk * on the odometer reading of the last service by Emil Frey - this is covered in a letter from the owner retained in the file. This reflects that theVehicle Information Centre (VIC) required repair at 13,000km which was carried out by experts - Technikschmitte. After this, the VIC worked well but jumped to 31,000km at the time of the service at Emil Frey - the reason is unknown but again, the VIC appears to be functioning perfectly. The handbook and service voucher book are both in their wallet in the car and inspection of the latter notes that Fast Line regularly serviced the car up 2011 when another specialist, Neidhart Stafa, took over and it was through them that the current owner acquired the car. The sales records for this one change of ownership are in the history file and Neidhart Stafa subsequently carried out maintenance duties until May of 2018, when the car was serviced last by Emil Frey Classics. This maintenance and care is evidenced by the presentation condition of this exceptional car - she deviates from original only in the fitment of a wooden steering wheel - the current owner's personal choice, but the original is retainedwith the car.

  • Auction: 24th Oct 2019 - RM Sotheby's - London Auction

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' London event, 24 October 2019. One-of-one special-edition Virage built in collaboration with CartierSingle ownership and under 3,500 miles from newUnique piece of Aston Martin history On 25 May 1935, Mortimer Mort Morris-Goodall called the first meeting of the Aston Martin Owners Club. Sixty years later, on the Diamond Jubilee of that inaugural meeting, the marque teamed with famed jewellers Cartier to produce this one-of-a-kind Diamond Jubilee Virage Volanteoffered for sale with jewels in excess of $1 million! The Virage was the last of the handmade Aston Martins built before Fords ownership meant making significant changes to the production process. First offered in coupe form upon its debut in 1988, the new Virage was much more graceful and streamlined than its V8 predecessors. Remarkably modern-looking, the lines of the Virage were low and clean, and featured an all-aluminium hand-formed body. Despite being a large and heavy car, outfitted with Connollyleather, Wilton wool carpets, and wood trim, the 5.3-litre V-8 engine was equipped with Weber-Marelli fuel injection and a new cylinder head engineered by Callaway in Connecticut. With an output of 330 horsepower and 364 foot-pounds of torque, the Virage was much more than just a powerful gentlemans express. In 1992 Aston Martin updated the Virage by offering the open-topped Volante and the option of a 6.3-litre engine conversion, which included several body modifications. Many of the owners wished to receive the body upgrades but retain the 5.3-litre enginechassis 60200, offered here, is one of these special Cosmetic or Wide Body Volantes. Visible are the enlarged wheel arches to hold the larger split-rim wheels, the larger front air dam, and revised sill covers. Chassis 60200, of course, also has the addition of the Diamond Jubilee badge displayed proudly on the boota reminder that this Virage is one of a kind.Offered today from its first and only owner, still finished in its original colours ofsilver over black leather, and showing just under 3,500 miles from new, this is certainly the ultimate Virage for any dedicated Aston Martin Owners Club enthusiast. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/lf19.
