If you haven’t yet popped along to Saturday Night Live in Melbourne, we can highly recommend it

Saturday Night Live

Every Saturday evening, from around 5.00pm and rolling through for some hours, is an informal gathering of car nuts with everything from rods, through to late-model Mustangs, Porsches, minis, old family cars, you name it.

Essentially it’s a passing parade of petrol heads who drop in for a chat, look at each other’s machinery and share a coffee.

It happens most Saturdays on at the inbound BP servo on Eastlink.

Was your car there last weekend? Check out our gallery.

And here’s a view from our own Glenn Torrens, who normally resides in sunny Sydney…

HANGING out on a Saturday night. It’s one of the most time-honoured past-times of Aussie cars nuts; just catching-up with a bunch of like-minded others and doing, well, not much at all except hanging around, chatting and checking out cars.

That happens most Saturday evenings at the Eastlink BP service station. Supported by the BP management (which provides a security/crowd control presence) the in-bound servo’s huge car park is an ideal place to park and walk around and do nothing more than check out cars.

The night we – me, Morley and 4X4 Australia magazine’s car freak editor, Mat Raudonikis – were there, it was chock-a block full of US and Aussie muscle, street machines, yankee cruisers, show-room fresh and restored classics, street/strip cars, classic Japanese family and performance tin, and a handful of survivor and shed-find stuff, surrounded by happy enthusiast and their families.

A colourful highlight was a crew who turned up with a gaggle of ex-pursuit yellow Commodores and parked them side by side. Some modified, some stock and wearing era-correct whirly-gigs and badging, it was a terrific display of some of Vic Police’s past lords of the bitumen. Thumbs-up, lads.

I can’t tell you how long it’s been going on (I’m from NSW) but it’s obviously a well-respected little get-together for the Melbourne car crew. And apart from one cap-backwards P-plater in a VT Commo wagon who skidded a rear tyre while doing a car-park U-turn (yes really – not even an episode of Neighbours could have scripted this dickhead better!) we didn’t see anything so naughty as a dropped chip packet all evening.

Let’s hope Saturday nights at the BP servo stays that way.
