Rolls-Royce Railton replica – today’s tempter

1930s speedster throwback

This is one of those situations where you would be in absolutely no fear of having another car like yours parked next to you at the nearest classic meeting.

Evidently a one-off build, this monster is a throwback to the hair-raising speedsters of the 1930s which variously fought it out on the salt flats of Utah or the banking at Brooklands.

The seller says it’s a tribute to John Cobb’s 1933 Napier Railton, which ran a 24lt W12 Napier aero engine.

Instead of the Napier, this one is running a 27lt V12 Rolls-Royce Merlin, which first ran on a test bench in 1933. It went on to power legendary WWII aircraft such as the Supermarine Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane.

Railton, by the way, produced its own road cars for a while and was perhaps most famous as an engineering partner in Malcom Campbell’s Bluebirds.

As for this car, it claims 800hp and runs a five-speed Mercedes-Benz 8-ton bus transmission with a Ford 9-inch differential. The body is fiberglass.

Located in Forster NSW, it’s on the market for $195,000.
