2007 Alfa Romeo 159 2.4 JTD Sportwagon

[Jan 2012] Any 'wagon' with 'sport' in its model designation conjures up thoughts of compromise. The Alfa Romeo 159 Sportwagon walks this fine line as competently as most.

First impressions count, and the cockpit screams 'sports' as loudly as its Latin lungs will allow, with ridged aluminium the material of prominence. We really liked the sexy and contemporary decor with the two-tone black and tan leather arrangement on our test car most fetching and fit and finish seems very good indeed.

Alfas are drivers' cars, calling for pilot involvement and the Sportwagon is no exception, with our test car featuring the 'intuitive' Qtronic six-speed auto. It offers well-spaced ratios, but a bugbear here was the tendency to 'hold' a ratio longer than required when on a constant throttle, just when you want things to settle into a nice, relaxed lope. It made the experience frenetic for no real gain.

The engine never quite hides its oiler roots, and is really quite noisy - especially at standstill. But while it may make a bit of mechanical din, it pulls very well and is responsive in all the right places. Torque is there from the bottom (as it should be from a 20-valve, five-cylinder turbodiesel) and urge, while not mind-blowing, is decent to the 4500rpm redline. The manner in which the engine develops its power sees it leap out of corners, riding a lovely wave of instant torque.

Handling is very good indeed. In short, it sticks, steers and stomps. The steering is really lovely, and the brakes more than up to the task.

It is simply gorgeous on the eye. From bow to stern, there is not a poor angle. This is an area that Alfa can rightly claim as a cornerstone of its recent incarnations. There is simply no doubting Giorgetto Giugiaro when it comes to penning compound curves and turning them into metal masterpieces.

For a car that purports to accommodate small family needs, the decent boot space comes at the hefty cost of limited rear passenger legroom. Another 50mm taken from the cargo area and given to the rear passenger would have gone a long way to sorting this. In addition the rear seat backs are set at a steep angle and the (beautifully finished) leather squabs are simply too hard.

Put simply, the 159 is too small for a family wagon, but if Dad is looking for a sporty second car that Mum will like for its practical (if a little tight for rear passengers) carrying space, the 2.4 JTD might just fit the bill.
