1965 Mercedes-Benz SL230 - Reader Ride
Finding the right car was a long and frustrating process for Bill Sergakis but it ended well
I bought this car sight-unseen from Sydney. I was tired of looking – had been for quite some time – and always getting pipped at the post. I did my research beforehand, spoke to previous owners and mechanics, and got it.
At the time I was targeting this model. I just like the look – it’s timeless and a classic. It’s a Paul Bracq design and I wanted it to be original.
It’s running the Benz straight six of the period and a four-speed automatic transmission, with drum brakes all round. The engine is a single overhead cam unit and has early Bosch injection. They were used to good effect in rallying.
The interior is very typical of the period and the huge steering wheel is instantly recognisable. I have other cars, but this one is special – it’s elegant and easy to drive. Though I need the space at home, this one isn’t going anywhere.
