1970 Ford XW Falcon GT - Reader Ride
Steve Johnson's 1970 XW Falcon GT
Two cops from Adelaide walked into Maughan Thiem Ford in the city and ordered themselves a pair of XW Falcon GTs in Lime Frost Metallic. And they were the only two made in this colour! One had black interior and the other, this one, had saddle interior.
The car turned up at a previous GT Nationals with a bloke’s pushbike in the back seat; he was going to sell it at the event and ride home. I saw it on the starting line of the Clipsal 500 track but didn’t get to buy it. I grabbed it three years later from the next owner and then launched into a full rotisserie restoration.

I put new sill panels on it, a new door and a new bonnet after the soda blasters screwed it. It had all the chrome crap under the bonnet, three big amps under the carpet, speakers on the parcel shelf and 8in five-slot wheels; all the usual young fella 1980s stuff.

My plan was to have it ready for the 2009 Nationals here in Adelaide as I wanted to bring the car home, but although it was painted, I just couldn’t finish it in time for the event. The old owners were still alive then, but I’ve just learned that they’ve recently died. Actually, a fellow spoke to my wife yesterday at scrutineering; he was the cousin of the bloke who bought the other Lime Frost GT, the one with the black interior. He told me it had been painted Reef Green at some point, but other than that, we don’t know. It could be dead now, but I hope it’s not; just hiding.
