Ray & Sue Lodder's 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL

Iit’s originally an American car, which we bought through a Bonhams auction in Sydney around 2003-2004. It looked nice, but some of the work that had been done on it wasn’t really up to scratch so we decided to restore. That gave us a chance to rectify some of the things that happen to cars over a 50-or-so year history.

Why do I like it? Have a look at it! It’s got more curves than Marylin Monroe. Having said that, it goes like shit off a shovel!

It’s fast and when Mercedes-Benz brought it out they advertised it as the fastest road car in the world.

Is there a policeman sitting near? I’ve had it up to 135mph and it will do more. On a racetrack of course.

[Sue joins us.] It’s gorgeous. It’s red, it goes fast and it puts a big grin on his face. When he gets in, I have to ask him how old he is because sometimes he acts like an 18-year-old!

Valuation guide: Has to be done on a case-by-case basis, but we're talking well over $1m.
