Patricia Quilty has had a string of Fords, and now she's the proud owner of a Holden SS ute

Patricia Quilty's Holden SS Ute

I’m a motorsport and car tragic from a young age. My next door neighbour when I was growing up had a speedway car and I spent 90 per cent of my spare time watching him build and pulling down engines, went to the Cherry Lane Speedway in Laverton – which is no longer there. He inspired me, as he was a paraplegic who got his CAMS licence and went
racing.

He had a one-tonner ute and people started doing them up – I like the idea of doing it myself.

I managed to get an HT Monaro for a couple of hundred dollars with the idea of stripping and restore it. But life got in the way and I had to ditch that idea.

Jump ahead a couple of years I was going out with a guy who was also into his racing, I was at Sandown one day and literally walked into Peter Brock. I apologised profusely and couldn’t talk for about an hour afterwards! I then found out the boyfriend was a Ford man and had to let him go.

As it turned out my husband Paul is also a Ford man. He’s still around, even though he kept buying us Fords! One of the highlights was an XR6, but that didn’t end well as I put it on its lid. While I recovered, I thought now’s my chance.

So I got a red SV6 but got rid of it because it was chewing through petrol. It used more fuel than my current V8.

I saw this SS ute and thought ‘that’s my car’. Paul was also on the lookout and had spotted exactly the same car! So I signed up.

What do I like about it? That I don’t have to have kids in the back seat! There’s nothing worse than having fries flying around the back of a sedan.

We go to the V8 Supercars quite a bit and we can pack up the back and do it in a bit of style.

I’ve always wanted a ute, and I can see this one staying a while. It was a good choice.
