ALAN PARIS’S 1972 FALCON XA COUPE

I’ve owned this car for 26 years now, I originally offered to buy it after it had finished its career as a drag car at Calder Speedway but the seller wanted squillions of dollars for it, so initially I gave it a miss. A young fella owned it, and he had to sell it because he was getting married, so a year later he rang me and asked if I was still interested.

I was rebuilding an XB at the time, but I decided that the body was unsaveable, so I told the kid to sell his motor, diff and all the expensive bits to someone else, and I’ll buy the shell. So I pulled all the bits out of the one I was restoring and put it into the new body and voila!

Other than the bodywork it is pretty stock. It does have a new interior with bucket seats all round, and some American speedway wheels from an old Mustang.

It’s a bastard car. Half XA and half XB, but that’s fine. I’ve never been interested in owning a car that is exactly as it left the factory, I built it simply because I like black, I like chrome and I like bucket seats. Purists take one look and sigh with disapproval, but I don’t care.

I heard about the Ford Fan Day through a friend from the Coupe club, they told me they were looking for people to volunteer their car. It’s been great to see all these Falcons together, but I wish Ford made it open to the public. This is the last time they will be able to do something like this, so it would have been nice to have more people involved.
