Lisa Avery's 1959 Chevrolet El Camino

Ten years ago I passed up an opportunity to buy an El Camino and didn’t. I kicked myself and ever since then I had been hunting for one that wouldn’t break the bank. I’ve always had a ute fetish and I wanted a ’59 because I love the ‘cats eye’ rear end and the body lines. I found my car on the Classic Cars Liquidators website and my husband Jamie and I had a good look at the photos but didn’t really discuss it until the next morning, then decided to buy it, sight unseen. That was 12 months ago.

It took six months to get here but as soon as I saw ‘Ella’, which is what I call her, it was instant love. It was a Texas car but I don’t know anything more about its history. It already had the custom paint job and looked nice but mechanically it had a lot of bugs and we had to re-do all the suspension, wiring and chrome. It’s my first old car and now I know what people mean when they say they’re money pits. Jamie’s done most of the work but he made me change the sump and take all the springs out.

Its size doesn’t bother me but I’m still getting used to left-hand drive and people often yell out, "Nice car, mate!" to Jamie because they think he’s driving it. It gets a lot of looks. It’s got a pretty stock 327 and we’re going to leave it like that at the moment, but I want to get air-ride suspension and a hard tonneau. I wasn’t a car lover before I met Jamie but I am now! I probably drive it every second weekend now that summer’s here.
