Congratulations to Ward Turner of Queensland and his superb 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1, winner of the Resto of the Year

Ward's Mustang project came about by accident. Years earlier he did up an XD Falcon and always wanted to tackle a two-door Falcon. By the time he was ready to buy the market had exploded and prices had skyrocketed. Enter plan B – an American muscle car.

A business friend with US connections found the Mach 1, a barn find from eastern California that had been in storage since 1995 until Ward acquired it in 2012. The intention was to keep it stock and this was tasked to a group of skilled craftsman in southern Queensland. The D-block engine went off for a rebuild and a bit more grunt, the body was stripped and bead blasted, new wiring was added, suspension and brakes were reworked and the interior received a makeover including rewiring.

Finally the Mach 1 Mustang fired into life in 2018 after resting for 23 years. Ward had two motivations, a life-long ambition to restore a car like this and with a son serving in Afghanistan, Ward promised him a ride, because if he was in it, it meant he'd made it back. Let the good times roll.
