Stuttgart’s first V8: affordable entry into classic Porsche ownership
Porsche prices continue to surge, fuelled by the ubiquitous rear-engined 911 lineage. However, this is forcing many buyers seeking to enter the Stuttgart shield brand to increasingly look at Porche’s catalogue of front-engined cars.
They’ve been historically unloved by collectors until recently, and while they’ve traditionally been positioned as Porsche’s “entry-level” models; you might be surprised to know that Porsche execs were at one point considering replacing the iconic 911 with their more conventional front-engined 928.
Indeed, Porsche predicted the 928 to have a far wider appeal in its sporting and predictable driving mannerisms packaged in a more conventional front-engined, comfortable and well-equipped grand tourer.
The 928 was also Porsche’s first production V8 model, powered by a range of in-house developed V8s ranging from 4.5lt to 5.4lt of displacement.
They were a far better car than many gave it credit for, and the tide is turning in the face of ever-rising Porsche values.
The front-engined 928 is still one of the most affordable paths into classic Porsche ownership, and this 928 S makes a strong case for itself.
The 80s is back in fashion, and its once dorky looks are starting to develop a charm of their own.
This 928 S is specified with the 4.7lt V8, described as a “high output Euro spec model”. There isn’t too much detail in the listing, but we’d guess that means the car is a mid-80s UK-delivered model.
It’s a four-speed automatic and overall presents in fair-to-good condition; with a presentable exterior and a complete interior showing some visual wear to the gear shifter and switchgear, and some cracking in the leather front seats.
The car is said to drive very well, and should prove to be a nice project for someone to refresh while they spend the weekend cruising!
The 928 S has covered just 83,000 miles and is based in Victoria.
Listed for $17,000, you can check out the full listing here!
