1981 Porsche 911 SC coupe
Sold: $60,000
Shannons
Air cooled Porsches have been going off the sensibility scale recently with huge sums of money being exchanged, so there was plenty of interest in this two-owner 911 SC. Arguably the last of the ‘classic’ Porsches the SC was built between 1978 and 1983. This one is complete, but in need of a bit of cosmetic TLC to bring it back to its original condition. After strong bidding I can’t help but think the winner has walked away with a bargain.
1974 Porsche 914 Monterey Spyder
Sold: $47,909
Graysonline
You’d be forgiven for scratching your head and wondering what the hell kind of Porsche this is. It’s a Monterey Spyder, one of just 109 made and the only one on these shores. Mid engined with a Targa top it has a 2-litre supercharged engine driving the rear wheels through a five-speed gearbox. Uncommon in the extreme, this one has undergone a full resto and was snapped up for an excellent price by what I suspect is a wily investor.
1957 Mk1 Jaguar
Sold: $35,000
Shannons
The MK 1 Jag combined lashings of leather and wood with a sprinkling of sportiness. Its 3.4-litre engine being a de-stroked version of that found in the iconic D-Type. This one has undergone a $70k resto and been in the same hands for the past 13 years. The chrome accoutrements and paintwork are generally sound and it has only travelled 2000 miles in the past 13 years.
2009 HSV W427
Sold: $98,000
Shannons
The result achieved by this W427 suggests the market is still strong for Aussie classics. This one-owner W427, built to celebrate HSV’s 30th anniversary was, at the time, Australia’s most powerful and still most expensive, locally made car with a sticker price of $155,500. This W427 wears build number 110 and has travelled 55,925 kms.
1981 Ford XD Fairmont ESP
Sold: $46,000
Shannons
This is the Falcon that buried the Commodore. Launched six months after the VB Commodore the full-size Falcon XD proved a hit with buyers and the same happened at the auction. Eager bidders vied for this three-owner, six-cylinder ESP with its 15-inch Globe alloys, unique colour, Bilstein shocks, stiffer springs, bigger anti-roll bars and a quicker steering ratio. This rare bird has been with the vendor for the past 12 years and since its repainting it hasn’t been driven. It was sold with its original service books and documents.
What’s moving and shaking:
Toyota MR2 Gen-2
If a mid-engine coupe for under $35k grabs your interest, check out the second-generation Toyota MR2. Looking totally different from its predecessor and dubbed a poor man’s Ferrari due to its borrowed styling cues, the gen-two Mister 2 was bigger, more powerful and an all-round better jigger. The handling was a key focus with Toyota enlisting the advice of Dan Gurney of F1, NASCAR, and Le Mans fame. Shannons auctions recently sold one for $31,000, showing there’s keen interest and a strong following for this model.
