2021 Market Review - Porsche 911/993/996/Boxster 1988-2008
The huge gulf in values between 1998-2001 911s and earlier versions comes down to just one factor – a flawed version of the flat-six engine.
Problems with the 3.4 engine can be fixed though, and buyers then have a Porker that looks the goods for a discount price. Post-2001 Carreras are plentiful, cost $75,000 in excellent condition and come with a newer version of the admired 3.6-litre engine.
If you want a Porsche with all-wheel traction, head back to the 1990s and be prepared to spend around $150K on a Carrera 4. The GT3 is a feisty 280kW weapon for track days and comes at half the price of the even more serious GT2.
Affordable and fun as well are Boxster 2.7s that start in good condition from around $20,000.
993 Carrera 1991-97 $133,920 [14]
996 3.4 1998-01 $65,480 [18]
Carrera 2002-06 $69,010 [18]
Carrera 4 $157,650 [3]
Carrera GT3 2003-06 $250,000 [2]
Boxster 1997-03 $23,560 [18]
Boxster 2004-08 $43,100 [16]
