Oz to get the Bullitt…eventually

Get out your brown-fleck sports jacket, suede shoes and put on your best Steve McQueen scowl.

The 50th Anniversary edition of the Mustang Bullitt shown at the Detroit Motorshow in January is due on our shores late 2018, Ford Australia has announced.

Celebrating the iconic McQueen film, the Mustang Bullitt will be sold as a limited-edition model and only available in the classic Dark Highland Green of the original movie car.

The Bullitt will be based on the 2018 Mustang range, which boasts a tougher look and new technologies from Ford’s LeMans and Daytona-winning GT racers.

Although final Australian specifications haven’t been announced, the 5.0-litre V8 is expected to get a power boost to 350kW and 570Nm as per the US model. Expect an auto and six-speed manual transmission, with, fingers crossed, the cue-ball gear knob as sold in America.

Bullitt has one of the most legendary car chases in cinematic history; the 10-minute sequence follows Steve McQueen at the wheel of a 1968 Mustang GT fastback as he chases two hitmen through the streets of San Francisco, USA

“Steve McQueen as Bullitt created a legend and Mustang Bullitt is the perfect way to salute an icon of the silver screen,” said Graeme Whickman, President and CEO, Ford Australia. “We’re excited to offer Australian buyers the Mustang Bullitt, especially on the 50th anniversary of the legendary film.
