Big premium 1967 coupe
Oldsmobile as a brand went though a major shake-up of its image through the 1960s, throwing off the somewhat dowdy family car cloak and taking on the burgeoning muscle car race.
It developed some fantastic models along the way, and if you see something with the 4-4-2 tag, you know it’s intended as a proper muscle car. It originally referred to a four-speed manual transmission, four-barrel carburettor and dual exhausts, though Olds sometimes took some liberties with the designation.
Of all the variants built across the years, the Cutlass Supreme is right up there on the desriabliity scale.
From 1966 the series was sporting a 400-cube V8 as a common fitment, so performance was attention-getting.
As was typical for the era, numerous variants were built, so it pays to carefully check the spec of any car you’re targetting. For example, there was also a three-speed manual and two different four-speeds available in 1967.
This example is with Brooklands Classic Cars in Melbourne and is listed at $45,500.
See our 4-4-2 buyer guide – note the prices are from 2017 and will have moved on since then.
We also have a feature on the next-gen 442 from 1970.
