Classic Italian

The sixties through seventies seemed to be prime time for makers of big four-seater coupes like the Fiat 130, with most of the big European marques and even the Aussies joining in at various stages.

If it was from Europe, it was likely to carry a hefty price tag, which severely limited sales in this country and world-wide it sold a little under 5000 units.

Also available as a four-door sedan, the 130 was styled by Paolo Martin of Pininfarina and the coupe is regarded as one of which established the design house as a major player.

Under the paint the series ran a 2.8lt and then 3.2lt V6, matched to a three-speed auto or five-speed manual transmission, with independent suspension all-round.

As our owner feature suggests, they were a good-handling package for the era: "The 130 steered beautifully and always felt balanced. 'Seldom have we encountered such excellent handling in a car of this size,' said Autocar in a road test of the 2.9-litre 130 sedan in its 20 March 1969 edition. It is said that a good big car shrinks around you and that was how the Fiat behaved when pushed hard."

This 1974 example is a 3.2lt with auto and was repainted approximately four years ago. The seller says it runs well. Based near Charters Towers in Queensland, it's on the market for $32,000.
