Chev power and six-speed

Scratch the surface of the story of the car makers of this era, and you’ll often discover a quirky story. Healey is one.

From one of our Healey features: "Many of motoring’s greatest engineers came from very humble origins. And while the likes of Ferdinand Porsche and Bruce McLaren remain celebrated icons today, before them came Donald Healey.

"Healey volunteered with the Royal Flying Corps when WWI began at the ripe old age of 16. Following the war he began learning motor skills at his father’s shop in Cornwall. Soon he was entering every rally he could with his 832cc Triumph Super Seven. He entered the 1929 Monte Carlo rally for the first time in 1929, got lost and was disqualified.

"The next year he returned – and finished seventh. A year after that he won outright."

Typically you’d expect a premium Healey of this era to be running a 3.0lt straight six engine, however this example is very different.

Under the swooping bodywork is an injected 6.0lt L98 Chevrolet V8, matched to a six-speed Tremec manual transmission.

The chassis has been extensively modified to cope with the additional power and includes adjustable coilover suspension and disc brakes all round.

It’s with The Healey Factory in Melbourne at $249,000.
