The auction world is full of surprises with big sales and the odd bargain. Here are some of the highlights

1985 Holden VK Commodore GPA SS

Sold: $310,000
Grays

When Australia adopted Group A touring car regs in 1985, homologation specials were built by carmakers to comply. The VK was the first special Commodore built by HDT Special Vehicles with GMH. 500 were made, all Formula Blue with a 4.9lt V8 and they sold out in a heartbeat. Nowadays these blue Group As are the most sought-after Brock/HDT cars. According to the seller this one has covered 75,548km and is in original, remaining untouched for over 37 years. It sold with a logbook.

This K-Code fastback pony was exported to Australia in 2003 and underwent a resto by Mustangs of Melbourne. Under the bonnet is a 289ci V8 bolted to a four-speed top loader manual. It has been with the vendor for the past six years and collected several trophies including Most Original Car at an all Ford day. Finished in Ivy green metallic with white interior, it sports the Rally pack option giving it dark timber dash inlays. It rolls on 14-inch polished steel wheels.

1975 Holden HJ Sandman ute

It has an L32 253ci V8 rebuilt to factory spec, an M20 manual box, and is finished in Absinth Yellow with black vinyl trim. Inside there’s a centre console, GTS dash and steering wheel, and it rides on original GTS wheels.

2020 Ford GT

Australian Todd Willing played a lead role in the Ford GT design and this one was owned by racing legend Parnelli Jones. It has travelled just 24 kilometres and has over $95,000 of options. Always the racer, Jones ordered it with the optional six-point racing harnesses. The GT is powered by a 3.5 litre twin-turbo DOHC 660hp V6. Jones added his signature across the dash.

On the block:

2012 Lexus LFA coupe

Shannons 2022 Winter Timed Online Auction
2-9th August
Estimate: $1.0-$1.3 million

Jeremy Clarkson once said, "The LFA coupe is the best car I’ve ever driven." Only 10 of these Japanese supercars came to Australia of the 500 made and this one-owner car, with pearlescent paint and build number 351 has hardly been used. Taking over 10 years from conception to showrooms the LFA’s wailing 4.8-litre 552 horsepower V10 engine produces a sound like no other car, save for an F1. Toyota created the LFA to showcase its engineering cleverness and demonstrate it builds more than hatchbacks, utes and off-roaders.
