Next-gen classic

Chevrolet’s C4 Corvette was a massive development leap from its ageing C3 predecessor and in fact the company delayed its launch a year to 1984 so it could iron out the new design.

It was worth the wait. Our feature on the series notes: "With forged aluminium control arms, power rack and pinion steering and an exterior 24 percent more aerodynamic than its predecessor, the C4 Vette had the fundamentals absolutely right, setting a record 0.90-g skidpan results in early Car and Driver reviews."

While it’s the chrome bumper Corvettes which command the big prices – particularly the C2 series – the C4 potentially offers pretty good value.

This example runs an injected 350ci (5.7lt) small block V8, in 230hp trim, matched to a four-speed auto. It’s showing a little under 30,000 miles on the odo.

The Healey Factory in Melbourne has it on the market at $38,500.
