The ground-breaking Golf GTI debuted at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show with original production expected to be 5000 units, the number required for Production Touring Car racing. However, the Mk1 Golf GTI was so popular over 460,000 sold.

Distinguished by its black-plastic wheel arch extensions, front spoiler, red edging on the grille, tartan pattern seats and golf ball gear knob, it sat 15mm lower and wore ventilated front discs. Handling was improved with stiffer suspension.

The 1588cc four was mated to a close-ratio 4-speed manual. Top speed was 182km/h and 0-100km/h took 9.2 seconds. Check out this trio.

Here we have a matching numbers, left-hand drive, Mk1 Golf GTI that has been completely restored. The original owner added the optional factory steel-sliding sunroof.

This Melbourne-based Mk1 GTI is offered at $60,000 and is being sold with all books, resto documents, first-aid kit and car cover. More details here.
