1971 Ford Capri Perana - today's tempter
V8 special
Some of you may recall the Ford Capri’s greatest TV claim to fame, the Brit series Minder, however the model line also has a fascinating competition history.
For a collector with a motorsport interest, one of the prizes is unquestionably a Perana. These were a South African-developed variant, exchanging what to then was the biggest offering – a 3.0lt Essex V6 – for a 302ci (5.0lt) Windsor V8. Just 500 were made.
The bigger powerplant is a surprisingly good fit in the engine bay and of course the tuning and performance potential is enormous – particularly in such a light car.
Just a handful of these cars are known to be in the country and this example has, like many, had extensive modification for motorsport.
That includes being built for tarmac rallies in C2 spec. The 302 is now 330ci and is running through a Top Loader transmission matched to a BF Falcon diff. The seller says it has CAMS log books.
It’s with Muscle Car Warehouse in Sydney, priced at $115,000. Tel 02 6171 3055.
