Tribute build

What is it about XY Falcons that makes perfectly sane people empty their wallets? With the image-making XY GT-HO Phase III at stratospheric prices, we’ve seen GT values follow suit.

In a feature on the GTs, we note: "Built in far greater numbers (1557), was the GT, which started production earlier and shared much of the HO’s basic spec. Yes the differences were significant – engine prep and transmission spec, to name a couple – but the big 351 Cleveland, the legendary shaker air scoop and those rugged good looks were still there.

"You could argue that popularity is self-perpetuating, which might help to explain why an XY will always sell for substantially more than its near cousin and predecessor, the XW."

This 1971 example is a variant on the theme, a Falcon 500 ute – which was probably once used to carry paint tins and ladders – converted to a GT tribute.

The owner says it has a pretty serious engine spec with a 393 V8 claiming 700 horses. That’s with a Tremec five-speed manual and 9-inch diff.

It’s located in Sydney and is on the market at $70,000.
