Before the Arteon became VWs brand flagship the Passat was it. A mid-size sedan squabbling for buyers against Honda, Mazda and Subaru, but the B5 Passat had an ace up its sleeve in the form of a W8 engine.

The 202kW, 4.0lt, aluminium eight, with its cylinders in the shape of a W turned this model Passat from Clark Kent into Superman. And its oddball design meant it took up no more room than the V6.

‘4motion’ all-wheel drive and a five-speed auto came with the W8 making it an impressive package that could scarper from zero to 100km/h in 7.2seconds. Have a look at the last VW Beetle built.

This one owner example is a 2003 model and while it has travelled almost 170,000 klicks it has a full service history and original delivery documents.
