Fifties classic

Model sharing was the go at BMC in the fifties with the Morris Major/Austin Lancer/Wolseley 1500/Riley One-Point-Five all sharing the same core design.

The Austin Lancer and its cousin the Morris Major were developments of the UK models Wolseley 1500 and Riley One-Point-Five.

Both the 1500cc Lancer and Major were built at BMC's plant in Zetland NSW and were unique to Australia with up to 98 per cent local content.

Former BMC advertising exec Nairn Hindhaugh shows us his Austin Freeway.

According to the ad this is one of the best Series 1 Austin Lancers around. Originally sold by Winterbottom Motors Perth in 1959 its original owner kept it until 1991. Then it was bought by an English professor who restored it in 2019.

The third and current owner brought it to the east coast and has done some detail to work and now it's ready for its fourth custodian. Asking price is $15,500.
