One of the great hero cars of the 1980s

If you were a car-mad teenager in the 1980s, there were two posters you most wanted on your wall: Lamborghini Countach and this, the Ferrari Testarossa.

In addition to the wild styling, the Ferrari had some wild spec as well. The engine was a boxer 12 - yep, 12 - with four-valve heads and fuel injection. That lot was good for 390 horses and a 290km/h top speed.

Pininfarina's styling approach included a few subtle curves (in contrast to the severe angular approach on the Lambo) and those huge 'gills' in the flanks, clearly designed to help feed and cool that monster engine.

Even now it's an attention-grabbing bit of gear.

This example at Shannons has a compelling history, having once been given to Sir Elton John for his 40th birthday, by record company MCA.

We're told it remains a low miler in very good shape. Bidding is at a little over $300k with a day to go.
