In a climate where most Aussie chrome bumper classics seem to have shot past the $100,000 mark in cost, it's easy to forget there are still some halfway reasonable buys out there. And we'd rate the MGA series as one
For a start, we reckon the bodywork isn't far behind an E-type Jaguar when it comes to elegance. Plus, underneath they're a relatively straight-forward mechanical package that can easily be upgraded without spending a bomb.
Produced 1955-62, when the MGB took over, they began with a 1500cc four claiming a reasonably healthy 68 horses, The engines were upgraded along the way, including 1600 and even twin-cam variants.
Weighing only 900 kilos, they a light and surprisingly capable handling package.
This 1956 version in South Australia claims to be a turn-key proposition in very good shape. It's priced at $63,000.
