Only survivor of three examples

Grays is this currently auctioning off a 1979 HZ Holden panel van, and a very special one. It's one of three support vehicles for the victorious Holden Repco Reliability Trial team from 1979, and the only survivor.

We covered the restoration of the car at the start of the year and you can see the story here.

Peter Brock was the lead driver for the team and George Shepheard the engineeer who put the cars and vans together.

As we point out in the story, that team was a huge effort: three race cars, three support vans, plus several aircraft and probably a lot more.

It helped to make the reputation of the Commodore in this country, thanks to the 1-2-3 win, when something like 45 per cent of the field dropped out during the gruelling 19,000km event.

While the race cars were six-cylinder manuals, the vans were 302 V8 autos with limited slip diffs.

Owner Alan Kean treated the van to a full restoration, even going to the trouble of tracking down former Brock signwriter Wayne King and getting him to recreate the sponsor and team logos on the body.

Grays has a video on the car here, and an interview with one of the former drivers here.

The auction has three days to run.
