Among the 90-or-so treasures in the current Shannons auction is this, a 2001 Elfin Clubman, which we reckon is potentially a bit of a bargain.

Anyone who has observed a good quality clubman build from scratch will know that it's arduous and expensive - albeit great fun. One of our all-time favourites is this Mazda MX-5-based example.

This car is professionally built by Elfin, a well-known Australian name established by Garrie Cooper, with a proud race history.

See this feature on one of its more unusual coupes.

Powering this example is a supercharged DOHC 1600 Toyota engine, matched to a five-speed manual gearbox. The car claims an impressive 4.8sec 0-100km/h time.

We reckon this thing would be huge fun as an entertaining sports car that would double as a Sunday track toy.

With bidding concluding tonight, it has met reserve at $30,000. You could add a fair bit to that and still have serious bang for your performance dollar. See it here.
