Mercury Montclair – today's tempter
Rare fifties style
We’re pretty sure you’re in no danger of hitting matching car syndrome if you turn up to a show in this pillarless four door.
The owner of the 1956 V8 says it’s rare, and we’d agree – particularly in this country. The Mercury division of Ford USA only used the Montclair name a couple of times, for this 1955-60 series and another for a 1964-68 line-up.
The fifties range included two- and four-door versions, along with a ragtop. You could also get a Sun Valley version, on which the front half of the roof was tinted plexiglass.
Power in this first-gen car is provided by the 312 V8, claining 225hp (168kW). That’s matched to a three-speed auto.
The owner says the car has had an engine rebuild and overall is in good original shape. Based in Gippsland (Vic), it’s on the market for $65,000.
