Hope springs eternal when it's a rare car

A 1960 Jaguar roadster that was smashed and then locked away in a shed for 25 years has fetched $164,000 at a recent UK Bonhams auction. That was around nine times the top estimate.

Madness? Well it depends on how you look at it. A representative of the auction house has been quoted in UK media as saying it's not as bad as it looks.

The car spun off the road on a wet day in September 1996 and incredibly the owner walked away from the incident.

What was left of the Jag was shoved in a shed, with the vague intention of one day fixing it up. That day clearly never arrived.

However it would have been worth doing as this is a rare and desirable model: a XK150 S Drophead.

It runs a 3.8lt six, claiming an impressive 265hp (197kW). That gave it a 0-100km/h time of 7.3sec and a top speed of 215km/h.

Bonhams told local media it estimates the car could be worth $400,000-plus in good condition, which makes a restoration viable.

Hopefully it will one day be returned to its former glory.
