Four Aussie legends draw big numbers

A 1985 Holden/HDT VK Blue Meanie once owned and used by race legend Peter Brock hit the million dollar mark at auction via Grays this week. The online event closed last night and the final number was $1,057,000.

That was by far a record for this model, which previously hit a peak of under a quarter of that amount.

Equally impressive was the price commanded by the 1982 Ford Fairmont Ghia XE ESP – $354,750. It had just 60km on the odo and when assembled was badged as the last-ever V8 from Ford Australia. Again, that was easily a record for the model.

Of course, when it came to V8s, the company had a change of heart several years later.

Big money was also thrown at a 1973 XA Ford Falcon hardtop in RPO trim. A one-owner car in an unsual colour, it had been dragged out of a Queensland shed, where it had been locked away for decades. It fetched $276,000, which was steep considering it will need substantial restoration work.

Last on our list was a Leyland P76 Force 7V, one of what's thought to be just 10 survivors of this stillborn local model. It fetched a very respectable $100,200, but that wasn't enough to meet reserve.

Local collectible car prices have been extremely volatile of late, prompting people to refer to a 'Covid Tax' in the sector. There are a number of factors in play, including the ban on international travel. That seems to have resulted in a lot of spare cash washing around in the market. See our January news story on that theme.
