Ford Sierra RS Cosworth

Eighties hero car
At a time when we've seen the price of your average chrome bumper Ford GT soar well into six figures, it's nice to see something like this pop up as an alternative.
Meet the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth, once the stuff of nightmares for rival touring car racing teams and, in the right conditions, the basis of a pretty handy rally car.
As one of our Sierra features points out: "Internationally, the Sierra RS 500 won just about every touring car event going. In fact, many claim the Sierra was the most successful touring car ever, and its dominance led to the organisers changing the rules to outlaw the car. That’s what can happen when you develop a car so good that it wins 40 straight races in the British Touring Car Championship, a record that is yet to be broken and probably never will."
It of course made its mark in Australian touring car racing, with some formidable performances at Bathurst.
The road car, an homologation special, sported a 170kW two-litre turbocharged engine and specially-built five-speed Tremec transmission.
This 1986 example is reported to have around 50,000km on the odo, with a well-recorded history. It's a NSW car in the upcoming Shannons auction that starts on Feb 16.
Listed as lot 131, it's carrying an estimate of $90-110,000, which makes it a very interesting alternative to a local chrome bumper Ford.
