Online Sydney-Melbourne event delivers a few surprises
Shannons' first auction for the year, which concluded last night, delivered some surprising results.
First among them was the 1958 Porsche 356A Super project. After sitting in a shed for some decades, it was in need of a comprehensive restoration that would require deep pockets. It nevertheless went for $230,000.
Another surprise was an admittedly rare variant of a Mazda 1500, namely an SS. The Bertone-designed body is a stand-out with these things and this example had a few sensible mods. The guiding range was conservative at up to $10k, but bidding flew a long way past that level to settle at $36,100.
In a similar vein, this 1977 Honda Accord far exceeded expectations. It was an exceptional example with just 20,000km on the clock and a manual transmission. It went for $36,250. We suspect the price for this and the Mazda may be new local records.
If you needed proof that local chrome bumper GT cars are experiencing apparently limitless demand, it came in the form of a 1976 Ford XB GT. Nicely presented, it went for $90,500.
Speaking of Fords, bidding was enthusiastic on this Cosworth Sierra. Though raced locally with great success, they were never sold here through Ford. However a few grey imports have come in over time. This looked like a good example and was probably good buying at $116,800.
If you were in the hunt for something more luxurious, this well-preserved HZ Holden Statesman might be just the ticket. It was in very good if not showroom condition and looked like a good proposition at the final price of $44,500.
